Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been bitten by the travel bug. Paris is one of the places I’ve been fortunate enough to have been to Paris three times in my life so far. Each time I’ve gone, I’ve had the fortune to create wonderful memories. As a lover of history, I can’t help but seek out the museums, the palaces, and other places in the city that are filled with centuries worth of stories.
When I started writing The Gilded Chain, the thing that spoke to me most about the characters is that Wes, the billionaire art expert who is estranged from his cruel parents, spends much of his time in Paris at a luxurious flat. Callie, the heroine, is as far from Wes’s life style as she can get. Born and raised on a ranch, she’s never set foot outside her tiny world in the sleepy Colorado ranching town. But Callie has something Wes has always admired, a true talent for art. He has no talent of his own, but recognizes it when he sees it in others. Naturally, Paris was the location which would bring Wes and Callie together.
As I set out to craft Wes’s world in Paris, I drew upon a lot of my own experiences and memories from spending time there. Since Wes is almost native and Callie has never been there, I choose to show the city through Wes’s eyes as he tries to see it from Callie’s view and Callie’s new view of the city.
When I visited Paris I was addicted to the bakeries or Patisseries as they are called and all of the yummy concoctions they make of sweet breads with chocolate. I couldn’t pass up on writing about this, so it was fun for Wes to go and buy Callie a traditional Parisian breakfast while she is sleeping off the jet lag from the plane flight. Later on, Wes shows Callie all of the delights of the Louvre on an afterhours private tour. I had to refresh my memory when I was writing the Louvre scene to figure out what cool things I wanted Wes and Callie to see. Thankfully, I had a Louvre exhibit guide handy to pick out some paintings and Egyptian artifacts for them to see.
But the most fun I had was writing about the small details that helped Wes and Callie fall for each other. He takes Callie to Montmartre where all of the artists in Paris hang out and you as a tourist can get your portrait done. Naturally, Wes wants a portrait of Callie, since artists often don’t do their own portraits. And he stands behind the artist, making Callie laugh and smile while she gets drawn. Paris as a setting was very fun for a romance novel and the researching was easy and it took me down memory lane
