Thank you so much for having me today, Angela! Since my new YA thriller, IF YOU WRONG US, is out this week and because it’s Halloween season, I thought it would be a good time to talk thrillers. What makes a good one?
For me? It all starts with the characters. First, they have to be interesting. And you have to care about them. Lately, I’ve been writing a lot of anti-heroes, but with them, or with villains, readers still need to be invested in these people at some level. Even if the reason is that they are so despicable, we want to make sure they get what’s coming to them in the end.
For those who are more plot or setting driven, you could start with a thrilling location or situation as a way into your story.
Secondly, there needs to be a strong sense of good and evil. You can blur the lines, which I LOVE to do, but make sure there is clear motivation for the good and evil in the story.
Third, we need a reason to keep turning the page. And it should be exciting! Some ideas to keep the story going:
- Set the clock ticking
- Keep the stakes high for your characters
- Make trouble – mess up your characters’ world
- Consider Cliffhangers
- Engage the senses
- Let the reader in (looking over the shoulder)
- Use Pacing and sentence structure
- Be unpredictable

She began her career in TV news and though she’s been on both sides of the camera, she prefers to lurk behind the lens. Mostly, she loves to get lost in stories – in film, the theater, or on the page – and is a sucker for both the sinister and the sappy. She’s currently channeling her dark side as she works on her next book.
