Now that she has her freedom, she’s not giving it up.
Dragon shifter Keelin Petronilla spent centuries in forced hibernation dreaming of one thing: freedom. Now she’s living life on her terms—she’s ditched her clan for an unruly wolf pack, she tends bar for a half-demon, and she’s loving it…until a powerful supernatural being targets her. She intends to handle the mysterious attacks on her own…without the help of dragon Alpha Bran Devlin. Sure, he’s sexy in that hot, scowling possessive way, but Keelin wants to live her own life in her own way.

This is the first book by Katie Reus that I’ve read and it definitely will not be the last. From the moment I started Beyond the Darkness I got sucked it and didn’t want to put it down until the very end. Beyond the Darkness had it all for me: Well thought out and executed plot, humor, a good amount of smexyness: Bran is definitely book boyfriend material, and secondary characters and their own subplot/stories well woven into the story that it got me curious about them and what would be in their futures but didn’t detract at all from the main story.
I adore Bran and Keelin together they are sweet, sexy and a well matched couple. Bran is my kind of alpha male: Protective, but not overbearing. Sexy as sin and the best part, though I know sexy should be the best part, he actually knows how to communicate in more than caveman speak. Okay, he does do a bit of the grunting and glaring reply thing, but he is a dragon shifter somethings just need to be allowed. The fact that he, more often than not, expressed himself and didn’t leave Keelin to have to guess what he was thinking gave him huge brownie points. Keelin is someone I want to be besties with. She’s strong, intelligent, sassy and witty, but understands her limitations. She’d been sheltered for so long by her parents that she just wanted to experience life on her terms, but didn’t go crazy. She is taking the right steps to achieve it and doing it like a woman would, not a child, and learning about the world she is living. She doesn’t deny that she’s attracted to Bran, to herself or to him, and she is upfront with him about how important her freedom is to her.
As for the rest of the cast of characters in the book, I thought they were just as well written as Bran and Keelin and helped to give me a more in depth view of not only the H/h but the world that this series is taking place in since I have not read the first two books in the series, though they will be added to my ever expanding TBR pile, and I’m looking forward to seeing just what will happen with Bo and Nyx and the deal that was made.
