A sweet and steamy New Adult Romance from Amazon bestselling author of the Ruthless People series, J.J. McAvoy…
After an erotic one-week fling with a musician she meets in a bar, Thea Cunning never expects to see Levi Black again. Then Monday morning comes around, and she discovers that her former lover is not only her professor, but he’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state of Massachusetts.
With everyone in class vying to be one of the twelve disciples—a group of twelve students that Professor Black takes under his wing—tensions run high. Thea considers dropping his class, given their passionate week together and their undeniable chemistry. After all, there are other (less infuriatingly sexy) law professors on campus.
But to accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, Thea knows she needs to learn under the best of the best—and that’s Levi Black.
But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?
Having never read anything by J.J. McAvoy I decided to try Black Rainbow out based on the title and blurb, and found that despite a couple of hiccups in the story that the book was a sweet, sassy, fun and surprisingly light read in comparison to what I was expecting based on the blurb.
I loved Levi and Thea, both in and out of the classroom. Their bantering, no matter the tone, had me either grinning or laughing outloud. Levi has garnered a spot on my book boyfriend list and I have to admit that it is mostly due to his take no prisoners, cutthroat lawyer side. There is just something about a man who can cut a person down with a simple look. But the sweet, compassionate side of him showed a well balanced person who knew how to leave work in the office. Thea though confident and just a little quirky, is also a bit broken, but she perseveres and is determined to find a way to right the wrongs done to her family. While I liked experiencing their seven day tryst, I really enjoyed watching them deal with their whole student/professor messy situation. It wasn’t pretty at times, but it wasn’t as drama filled as I was expecting, which I didn’t mind. And I liked that they both had major respect for each others intelligence and drive, this is actually what made me love Levi. Thea’s brain and determination was as much an aphrodisiac for him as her body was.
Now for the story. As I said, I really did enjoy Black Rainbow, it was a fun and easy read and I not only liked Levi and Thea, but the supporting cast of characters Bethan was awesome, but then again so was Tristan and Atticus and thanks to the dual 1st person POV I got to know them all quite well. But there were a few hiccups in there that had me scratching my head and wondering how that could be. I’m all for suspending reality while reading a book, it doesn’t matter the genre, and I know some things are just taken for granted and that’s the way they are, but there were a few secrets that were exposed where I couldn’t help but question why the reactions to them were the way they were because in my mind I would have thought that while we, the readers, hadn’t figured it out, they the characters would have. But in the end, the hiccups didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of watching Levi and Thea work through the obstacles in their relationship.
Overall: Black Rainbow was a quick, easy and fun read and I really liked what the meaning behind a Black Rainbow is.
