Try a little dragon tenderness.
I am Glheanna the Decimator. I am a warrior. A soldier. I know no fear. No pain. No mercy. I do, however, know acute embarrassment! How could I not after getting dumped by a bastard dragon in front of my own troops? So I tuck tail and return to my cave, drowning my sorrows in ale—as is my family’s way. But instead of leaving me to my misery, I’ve been summoned to the Dragon Queen’s court.
As if my life wasn’t pathetic enough, Her Majesty now has me escorting the highborn Bram the Merciful through dangerous territories—not exactly the best use of my military training. And just so he can negotiate with enemy dragons instead of battling them? Honestly, what has my world come to? Then again…Bram is quite easy on the eyes. And the perfect distraction for what ails me. Perhaps I’m looking at all this the wrong way. Maybe there is a place for a little “mercy” in my life…

God I love the Dragon Kin series and after reading it I’m ALWAYS in a better mood than I was when I first started reading one of the books. The characters are crazy and over the top (okay most are dragon shifters but still), even the ones that appear “normal” are crazy, but they are all distinct and likeable in their craziness and their antics always make me laugh. Not the polite little chuckle kind of laugh, but the laugh out loud and sometimes snort while laughing variety. That’s how much I enjoy the characters, story and world that G.A. Aiken has created and this one was no different.
Dragon on Top is a prequel to the series as well as a re re-release and is about Glheanna the Decimator and Bram the Merciful and the road they took to their HEA. Since they both appear in the series there is no question that the get it, so it was fun to just sit back and watch as they got past their own hang ups and finally took the steps to making their feelings known and doing something about it. Part of the fun of their courtship was that Glheanna is the Dragonwarrior, she is a Cadwaladr after all, and Bram is the peacemaker. So on the surface they look like polar opposites, but as things progress we get to see just how alike they are in how they think and why they are perfect for each other. Of course the other Cadwaladr’s get to have their say in the process, as well as a few nudges from Queen Rhiannon as well as.
The writing was clean, engaging and paced well and I really enjoyed getting glimpse of the Fin’s, the sea dragons, and their world, which we don’t get a lot of in the main books. The one thing that I’m on the fence about isn’t so much the story, but recommending this as a story to start with if you have not started the series already. It is a prequel and there really isn’t much in it that would ruin any of the storylines in the series, but I think it would be in a ‘newbies’ interest to at least read the first couple of books to get a feel for the crazy that constantly goes on with these characters. But if you like a good dose of crazy, by all means jump right in!
The Bottom Line: Another crazy fun ride with a cast of characters who are more likely to hit you than hug you...and that’s when they actually like you.
