This is the first I've reviewed a Jill Shalvis novel, but not the first I've read. It is, however, the first of the Heartbreaker Bay series and what an interesting group of people. Definitely will be worth going back to read every Heartbreaker Bay novel and novella. Looking forward to Archer's book most, I think.
Shalvis gave us a cast of characters that are strong, quirky, several bricks shy of a full load and quite funny, sexy and real. Joe Malone is ex-military, still protective and up-in-arms for all the right reason, with a nice bum (the model could do more squats, but who am I to talk), broad shoulders and a big...truck. Get your mind out of the gutter! There is only enough room for me down here!
Kylie Masters is a master woodworker, raised by her grandfather embroiled in vital mystery of who stole the priceless piece of art, carved by the late Mr. Masters before the horrible fire which took his life. I love a mystery and Kylie loves every moment she spends with Joe, especially when they start knocking boots. To think it all started from a kiss. One she "hardly remembers."
Throughout the entire book, Shalvis intertwines humor, with characters who are stunted in their social interactions and afraid of commitment. Though neither of them are afraid of practicing kissing over and over again. Joe, for example, hides behind his responsibility for his father and work, rather than facing the fact he and Kylie have something long term. Though it was in regards to dinner, I believe his father summed Joe up nicely. "You know what you are? You're a pants-wearing, sodium-hating commie."
We do get our happily ever after, but not before a nail biting session between simple-minded bad guy, Kylie's mom and Kylie herself. Then there is an extremely tense moment between Kylie and Joe, but all is well that ends well because Joe does one of the things to Kylie he is really good at. Yes, grovelling is one of them, but there is just something about that kiss.
When love drives you crazy . . .
When sexy Joe Malone never calls after their explosive kiss, Kylie shoves him out of her mind. Until she needs a favor, and it’s a doozy. Something precious to her has been stolen and there’s only one person with unique finder-and-fixer skills that can help—Joe. It means swallowing her pride and somehow trying to avoid the temptation to throttle him—or seduce him.
the best thing to do . . .
No, Joe didn’t call after the kiss. He’s the fun time guy, not the forever guy. And Kylie, after all she’s been through, deserves a good man who will stay. But everything about Kylie makes it damned hard to focus, and though his brain knows what he has to do, his heart isn’t getting the memo.
… is enjoy the ride.
As Kylie and Joe go on the scavenger hunt of their lives, they discover surprising things about each other. Now, the best way for them to get over “that kiss” might just be to replace it with a hundred more.
