A night he can’t forget
Five years ago, Nick Markovic found himself consumed by his quest for vengeance. The one time he managed to find peace was in the arms of Hayley Dalton. Being with her was like bathing in sunlight, and he ached to feel that again, but he couldn’t. He gave his oath to Hayley’s cousin Desiree, his partner at McKay-Taggart and Knight, that he’d never let his darkness infect Hayley’s innocent world.
A spark she can’t put out
It was years before that Hayley offered everything she had to Nick. After that one amazing night, all she wanted was to be his forever. Unfortunately, Nick’s reaction was to walk away from her and never look back. The warm and caring man she’d discovered was gone, and after Des’s death, he’d only grown colder. But when Hayley finds herself in mortal danger, she’s forced to seek protection from the man who broke her heart.
A flame that threatens to consume them both
Haunted by the women he failed, Nick can’t allow himself to grow close to Hayley again. Running to stay ahead of the powerful forces that endanger their lives, they travel from the lush Garden in London to the glittering lights of Rio. As the threat against her becomes clearer, he realizes that to keep her safe he must confront the demons from his past, even if it costs him a future with the woman he loves.
Nick is a complicated, tense man. He has a past and isn't proud of it, but has found that he has learned to live with it. As long as he works with the Taggert group, he can redeem himself on some level. All of that fits in his world until Hayley, the one woman he felt calm and safe with, walks back into his life.
I like Hayley- she is tough and strong willed. She is independent and doesn't let her family influence her opinion of others. I like Nick too. He's got a kind heart, even if he sees himself as tainted and not good enough for Hayley, but he holds onto the past and won't let go. He can't get past it. As a reader, this was frustrating. I wanted him to get past it and move forward a bit faster.
Hayley finds friends amongst those people she's sought shelter and safety with at the Gardens, a sex club that everyone there has a stake in. Each of the men and women there plays a role once the lights go down and it will be up to Nick to teach Hayley the ropes or let her go. He isn't about to let her go it alone, so he begins to teach her the ropes.... literally.
She is pulled into a world with Nick she had no idea she'd slip so easily into. Hayley wouldn't have admitted to having submissive tendencies, but with Nick, she's willing to give up control and let him take charge of her pleasure. Outside the play rooms, they are caught in a tug-of-war with each other and those after Hayley. This makes for some interesting interactions and tense exchanges, but reading about their growth and eventual complete trust in each other is worth the time it takes.
I thought it read a bit slowly, but I enjoy Blake's work. Her writing is descriptive, well crafted and her characters are always multifaceted. Get to know Nick and Hayley- you won't be disappointed.
