Grieving from the death of his wife, Lord Colin Campbell listens to the cries of his newborn son whilst penning a missive to the king. With no marriage prospects, Colin petitions his majesty for help in finding a stepmother. Never again will he fall in love—the death of a woman brings more pain than losing a whole contingent of men on the battlefield.
Feisty, quick tongued and smart, Margaret Robinson is delighted when her father receives a messenger from the king…until she discovers what news he brings. In a sennight, she will wed the notorious Black Knight—her life is about to end.
Tension builds during the wedding and deteriorates from there…until an accident draws them together. Just when their love begins to blossom, a dire request arrives from the Pope. Colin must join the Crusades at once.
Their fragile love is forced to withstand the seductions of hell—Margaret tempted by a scoundrel laird—Colin courted by Satan himself. Aye, the war for Christendom could very well ruin their dreams forever.

I really did like this book but dear lord I wanted to throttle Colin throughout the first third of the book due to his treatment of Margaret. Don’t get me wrong. I empathized with his loss and I love the fact that he was so devoted to his late wife and that he truly grieved for her, but describing the man as boorish at the time is an understatement, but by the end of the book any thoughts of throttling him faded because he finally pulled his head out of his arse and it was all thanks to Margaret. Margaret, who I will admit I didn’t know if I would like or not in the beginning, is really the star of this book. She’s feisty, intelligent and has a generous heart. Her actions truly spoke volumes and I loved that she never allowed anyone to change her. She knew who she was and stood her ground when it was necessary and as I said thank goodness she did because once Colin finally accepted her things really got going. They were a force to be reckoned with and in turn they offered up sweet and sexy moments when they were together
My one issue was the pacing. It is a well written book, but there were times that it really dragged and while I understood why and applaud the author for not rushing through those moments because it kept the story true to what happened to those that lived in that era, it was frustrating. But outside of this one thing, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
