Meena has a secret guarded closely by her family—a secret as dangerous as the sea and buried just as deep. When court-appointed community-service workers are assigned to Flukes, the family-owned animal sanctuary, everyone is on high alert. It doesn’t help that Meena finds herself attracted to sexy-as-sin Blake Weathering, one of the new workers. If he wasn’t so distracting, she might be able to land Flukes a much-needed cruise-line contract.
Blake Weathering, the first in his family to attend public school, has developed a tough image. Unfortunately, it lands him in trouble. Now banned from his high school graduation ceremony, getting his diploma is dependent upon a community-service gig cleaning up fish crap. No diploma, no trust fund fortune—and no way to escape his overbearing father. The last thing he needs is the distraction of a mysterious girl with teal eyes who pulls at his heartstrings.
When Blake discovers Meena’s secret, they are both thrown into a desperate search for information about her past. Two worlds pull them in opposite directions, and they will have to fight to hold on to all that really matters.
***I received an ARC copy of Flukes from InkSlinger PR and Nicole Chase for an honest review***
I was excited to read this novel from the title alone and I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.
Hurricane Sandy leaves devastation in its wake as Ben and Marion survey the damage done to the island, they discover dolphins stuck in a netting and something more. That something had red hair, blue eyes, a tail and flukes instead of feet. The mermaid was not alone. Beside the mother dolphin and her daughter was a small mermaid with dark hair and teal eyes.
Boost ahead eighteen years and Flukes is preparing for a visit from a cruise line and are taking advantage of free labor as they do every year. Ben, Marian and Meena work with young people who have run into trouble with the law. Giving second chances is something Ben feels called to do, along with making sure the Dolphin stop and rescue center thrives.
Blake appears to be a wealthy, spoiled bad boy that finally had to pay the piper. Teamed up with Meena, the instant connection cannot be denied. From the first touch electricity draws them closer, danger threatens to pull them apart. A chance meeting with two merpeople and Meena is looking over her shoulder.
All of which I really liked. The fact that Meena is a mermaid with a rich heritage only made the story better. Perfect read for older teens, young adults, really anyone who loves a sweet romance with a hint of danger. Yes, there were areas that needed editing. I have an ARC after all, but other than a few things here or there, the story was wonderful and makes you wonder what a little merbaby would look like.
