Victorian London: For five years, Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself.
People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.
Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly "made" creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn't trust?
Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting.
Fast paced and an absolute delight to read! I love finding YA books that I can recommend to my students that are not filled with anything objectionable or that might be too mature for them. This book fits the bill and then some. It is full of adventure and suspense as well as a feisty female protagonist. She makes the book.
Charlie is a riot. She has disguised herself as a boy for self-preservation in the gritty London streets during the Victorian time period. She blends in well and is fast on her feet, though lacking proper nutrition she doesn’t look like a girl so it isn’t too difficult to hide what she is as long as she hangs out with young street-smart boys. She does have a secret though and hiding that from everyone is her most important task. Little does she know that she has drawn the attention of several people, and those people have very different agendas when it comes to her particular skill.
She is a necromancer and has the ability to bring the dead back to life. She discovered her little trick when her mother died and has avoided using it again until her life if in danger. Every time she manages to bring a person back, someone else wants to tap into her powers and use her for their gain. It gets so crazy Charlie doesn’t know who to trust and eventually has to allow someone in. Lincoln has his own secrets and his crew is a crack up. When Charlie discovers the good and the bad about each group seeking her out, she has to decide whom she trusts or believes and who’s hands she can put her life in at a time when she is learning more and more about the world around her.
The cover is beautiful and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Readers who like fantasy will find this well worth the read.
