Being young is all about the experiences: the first time you skip school, the first time you fall in love…the first time someone holds a gun to your head.
After being held hostage during a robbery at the local convenience store, seventeen-year-old Edie finds her attitude about life shattered. Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers.
While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future.
An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.
Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.
I'm a fan of Kylie Scott's adult books and was really excited to see her branch out to YA. She didn't disappoint me in the least. In fact, I read the book in one sitting. I finally put it down at 2 am and had to sit there for a while to process what I'd read. A good YA book gives the reader something to think about, ponder, discuss and hash out long after it has been read. Trust delivers!
Edie reminded me so much of myself as a teen I was instantly drawn to her. I could relate to her feeling fat and unattractive. I could relate to her attempts to hide her body and feel like she'd never meet a guy who would want her. She never felt like she fit in, was bullied at her all girls school and was protected by her single mom. She is very relatable character.
When she meets John, who becomes her guardian angel in a freak situation anyone could find themselves in if they are in a bad part of town, her world tilts on its axis and she finds her life as it is isn't enough. Or it's too much depending on your perspective. Her best friend betrays her and Edie finds the strength to change her direction. She switches schools and finds she is squarely in the path of John again who has his own secrets.
The two of them build a friendship first and slowly find they are connected on so many levels it is difficult for them to be apart. Each needs the other to remain centered. They both create a safe place for the other fall and it is very real. None of the book or their relationship feels put on or fake. I love the way Scott develops characters that you can relate to and feel for- she has a knack.
