For a price, the world’s most powerful people can have their darkest desires. On a private island hidden in the ocean, they may hunt humans for game, attend gladiator-style fights, participate in elaborate orgies, and freely indulge in all the deadly sins within the cosplay of ancient times.
Abducted from their life in Miami, Valoria and her younger sister wake up in this secret society, wherein Valoria is condemned to the fights and her sister is taken away to become a sex slave.
Now “property” of a sadistic tyrant, Valoria joins other men and women captives who are forced to fight and maim for others’ enjoyment, to run in their hunts, and participate in deviant fantasies. And she’s under the cold, watchful eye of Alexior, a hired trainer with his own agenda for being involved in the twisted decadence.
After surviving several near-death ordeals, a defiant Valoria focuses on her training and against all odds soon becomes a favorite. But she fights for one thing and one thing only—to be reunited with her sister and to be freed.
But promises of freedom are sometimes just manipulative lies . . .
Valoria only wanted to make a better life for herself and her sister. Applying for a job as a live-in maid, she never dreamed she would then be sold to the highest bidder and soon literally be fighting for her life. As I read the story, I put my daughters in the place of the sisters and wondered what would I do to get them back. Would I keep my humanity? Would I accept my fate? Would I do all which was necessary in order to keep my children alive? Would I believe the lies coming out of the elites mouth, or deep down would I know the truth? The characters are compelling, humanizing, dehumanizing and unfortunately, true to life in our socioeconomic divides. Perhaps not to the extent as written in the pages of Vanquished, but in the times where white slavery still exists, children are taken off the streets and sold to pedophiles, women and men are date raped, sexual harassment persists, and many more atrocities I could list, it is not a hard stretch of the imagination to believe such a think could happen. Then again, I could just be cynical having seen a lifetime of the haves getting more and the have nots taking their handouts while those who struggle get shit on, like Valoria. Whom I LOVE, by the way. She is strong, resourceful, angry, wicked smart and though cocky at the beginning, mature and seasoned at the end of the book.
My only complaint - I wanted more! I wanted to hear how they took down royalty, heads of state, politicians, etc. when they left the island. I wanted to see, in my minds eye the judges and wardens faces as they were handcuffed and sent to the same prisons they sent prisoners free, knowing they had no chance of a Valoria to reduce their sentence. I hope S.E. Green plans to revisit Valoria and Alexior. Oh, and Alexior let his wife die to calmly. Just sayin'. The bitch needed a bullet in the vagina for all she put him through, but that is MY bitchy side showing.
