The last time Piper Ross saw her best friend’s sexy older brother, Jase Simmons, he was being taken away in handcuffs. Seven years later, two things haven’t changed: Piper is still head-over-heels in love with him . . . and Forrestville’s chief of police—Piper’s dad—still hates his guts. So when Piper sees a chance to get close to Jase, she makes her move—literally. As his new roommate, and as the office manager of his tattoo shop, Piper won’t be satisfied until Jase knows that she wants to be his.
The quintessential good girl, Piper is pure temptation for Jase. The only reason he’s always kept his distance is because she’s the last person he’d ever want to hurt. But once he realizes that Piper is ready to take the leap, everything just makes sense. Suddenly Jase feels like a new man—until nasty rumors start swirling and Piper’s heartless father stirs up even more trouble. Now Jase must convince Piper that she wasn’t wrong about him . . . because falling in love never felt so right.
Marquita Valentine has been on my list of authors to buy for awhile, but I just never got around to it so when this one popped up I knew it was a sign that it was time to finally check her out and I’m very happy that I did. When We Fall was a well written, sweet and sexy story about finding the inner strength to follow your heart, live your life despite the odds and not allow others to steer you from what you know is right.
I really enjoyed and liked Piper. She had her own insecurities, thanks oh so much to her parents, but she found a way to overcome the b.s. that they laid on her shoulders. There were times when she did succumb to her insecurities, but she stood up for herself and what she wanted and I couldn’t help but admire her for believing in what her heart and gut knew was true. Jase is a bad boy, in a respect. He’s from the wrong side of the tracks, has done jail time but isn’t as bad as he believes himself to be. He has a huge heart and protects those he cares for, even if it’s from himself.
Their relationship is mix of being infatuated with your best friends brother and friends to lovers and I thought was done beautifully. I loved that Piper was the one who was doing the pursuing, but wasn’t a doormat or simply throwing herself at him and begging for his attention. She stood her ground and stood up for herself when she didn’t like something, like a certain nickname, and never faltered in her belief that Jase was the only one for her. Jase, god love him for not wanting to hurt Piper, but dear lord did it take a few knocks on the head for him to see the light and when he did he was so sweet and protective that it was hard to not fall in love with him as well.
The writing was engaging and though I haven’t read the previous book in the series, I never felt lost, but will definitely be going back and reading the first in the series. While I liked all the various twists and turns and how they all played out, there were some places where things dragged a bit, but it didn’t take away from the story at all. I enjoyed all the supporting cast and can’t wait to see more of Hunter, but the two that actually interested me the most were Piper’s parents. There is a strange undercurrent in their relationship that had me sitting up and taking notice, especially in that last scene with them.
The Bottom Line: When We Fall is a great read and I can’t wait to see who is up next!
