In a world of shadows, smoke, and covert black op missions—where people vanish and living one more day is never a given—falling in love is the last thing Victoria and Jacob expected.Victoria Marshall didn't cooperate by dying in the Afghani hell-hole like the CIA expected. Defying all probability, a privately-funded black ops group led by a handsome, sexy-as-sin southerner pulled her out of the warlord's prison cell and brought her home. Even half out of her mind with pain Tori knew this man was special. She made a date with the commander to meet one year later at a restaurant of his choice. Keeping that date was the best thing she ever did.
Jacob King found little physically attractive about the woman he saved from the warlord’s camp, though it was hard to see what lay under the filth and suppurating wounds she suffered from countless beatings. He admired her brave humor in the face of her agonizing injuries. This kind of tough-minded woman was someone he'd like to know as a friend. He never expected the leggy, blond bomb-shell in the red dress who showed up for their date.
But then he never expected she would save his life, either. In a world of shadows, smoke, and dangerous covert missions, where people routinely vanish and living one more day was never a given, Tori and Jacob fight to build their happily ever after.
Could NOT put this book down! I love Victoria. She is a strong, determined, independent, smart, savvy, funny, and beautiful. The description of her time in the warlord's camp was bone chilling. Her rescue was unexpected in terms of the way the team discovered she was there. They weren't there for her specifically. Her rescue was a happy accident and her strength of spirit and body were clear as she fought to stay awake as they flew her to safety.
Meeting one year later for a date neither was sure the other would remember was a chance they were both willing to take, and it paid off. The story unfolds from there and while I wasn't sure she could top the excitement of the first few chapters, Michaels builds a world of suspense, budding relationships, and emotional twists and turns. Jacob is hot, hot, hot; as are his four brothers. We don't get to know them beyond a short introduction and a few comments from other characters about who they are, but if they are anything like Jacob, I can't wait. The men on Jacob's team are also a force in and of themselves. The twins crack me up and Doc is a kind, but stubborn man. Chief is another entity altogether and it will be interesting to see what happens with him as well. Tori's father and sister are a large part of the story as well and pull things together nicely.
This book is well written and I didn't want it to come to an end. In fact, there were several story lines left hanging. I found myself wanting to know more about Tori's job and those who debriefed her. There was a hint that they wanted more from her and then it was dropped. There were also some relationships and characters I wanted to know more about, but Michaels left me hanging. Of course, this was brilliant because it guarantees I will be reading the rest of the books in the series. So glad I stumbled upon these books! Book 2 comes out later this year.
