Oh Sweet Redemption! Maybe it has to do with the Ferris brothers, maybe not, but after my tepid feelings towards Play I was a bit hesitant to get into but I am happy to say that I loved Lead. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down and when I did finish it I went back and re read it.
I absolutely adored Jimmy and Lena. As Jimmy’s story unfolded and the reasons as to why she started abusing drugs and alcohol and looked at himself and the world the way he did, it was hard not to fall for him because underneath the kevlar suit he liked to wear was a man with a good heart who noticed way more than people gave him credit for. But what I also liked was that he was who he was, even though I wanted to kick his ass a few times, he never changed just to appease someone, he may have been abrasive, but he was honest.
Lena is my new girl crush: Sassy, snarky, intelligent, not afraid to get in anyones face and stand her ground, honest and compassionate as well as a little quirky who isn’t blind to her faults, but is also comfortable in her own skin. I also loved the fact that she loved pie and desserts in general and wore fun pj’s.
My favorite thing about this book was how Jimmy and Lena’s relationship progressed. It felt real and right. The chemistry between them, even when they didn’t realize that there was chemistry between them, was intense and while Jimmy was a bit overbearing in some situations, all it did was show how into Lena he really was. The entire concept of Jimmy helping Lena to get over him was brilliant and I found myself shaking my head and chuckling the entire time because I knew what a futile venture it would be.
Overall: I laughed, sniffled, got pissed and just really loved Lead. And I must point out that the last two chapters were just awesome! So bring on Ben and Deep!
