Following an accident injuring her dad, twenty-four year old Leigh Storm returns home to the town she was once so desperate to escape.
It is only a matter of hours before she runs into Max 'Manwhore' Morgan. Dark eyed and dangerous to her heart, he is the very last person she wants to see. It might have been four years since she saw him last, but there's no denying the chemistry between them is as potent as ever. Max makes it clear he isn't about to let her run again, even if he is the one thing Leigh vowed to herself she would never date: a street racer.
After racing tore apart her own family and left a path of destruction in its wake, Leigh decided long ago that it is not the life she wants for herself. But when a wager gone wrong threatens her dad's livelihood, Leigh must go against everything she believes in.
This time there's more at stake on the quarter mile that just the family business-She's risking her heart as well.
What a great combination for me to read: hot men and racing. I knew from the beginning this book was right up my alley. And it did not disappoint me one bit.
The angst between Max and Leigh "Storm" from the beginning was amazing. The rest of the world could see all there was between the two of them, but I was beginning to wonder if they would ever see it. Max is domineering in a gentle fashion. He had secrets he hadn't told Leigh, just as she had a few of her own. Getting them to the point to admit their fears, their pasts, and their reasons for everything now was frustrating. I kept wanting to bang my head against the wall, but instead I kept reading. When Max told Leigh the truth about his 'manwhore' lifestyle I wanted to jump for joy! Boo-yah! I cannot give anymore details about it and spoil anything.
Then it came to Leigh saying she'd never date a racer. GAH! That's what she was. Heck, her dad, uncle, her cousin and best friend, and heck, even Max. How could she not? While the reader knows the reason why, Max didn't. She then has to confide in him as she is putting herself into a dangerous situation involving the same threat that tore her family apart years before. How does Max handle it? Well, let's imagine for a minute - tall, handsome, domineering male, but with a soft heart. A guy who loves the feel of the motor revving, the throttle lifting, the turn of the wheel, and the stick shift under his palm. He likes the tough quarter mile race as much as he likes a hot woman tucked against his side after he flies over the finish line at the end of the race with everyone else eating the dust his tires leave behind. He's cocky, he's arrogant, and he believes he knows just what Leigh Storm wants: him. So now that we have imagined this for a moment, how do you think he handled Storm deciding to put herself within a fraction of danger?
The ups and downs of their, at times, strangled relationship mixed with the heat of the moment racing, and Storm's father needing her more than ever, leads to a fabulous read. The story had its great moments, its slow moments, and the out loud gasping moments, not to mention me cursing a character or two a few times, especially when it came to the wager.
