Only fools fall in love...
After her senior year of high school leaves behind nothing but heartache, Olivia Beaumont is sure of this: She's no stupid girl. She sets out for Winston University, promising herself that she will remain focused on her first and only love - astronomy. But all it takes is cocky sophomore Brax Jenkins and an accidental collision with a football, to throw her entire year off course.
A quick-tempered Southie who escaped the inner city streets of Boston to pitch for Winston, Brax is known to play way more fields than just the baseball diamond. So, when his name is drawn to take part in his fraternity's hazing dare, Brax eagerly accepts the mission to take Olivia's virginity. But he doesn't plan on falling hard for the sweet and sassy Texas girl who sees right through his bad-boy persona.
As Olivia and Brax battle their feelings for each other, echoes of the past year begin to surface. A boy who once turned Olivia's whole world upside down reappears, and "harmless" pranks wreak havoc. Pretty soon the aspiring astronomer is on the verge of revealing her most difficult, heartbreaking secret. All the while, Brax must wrestle with the irrevocable dare, and Olivia struggles against all logic as she does the one thing only a stupid girl would do: fall in love.
Another amazing book! This is one of the best books I've read this year. I've read several books that I couldn't put down for one reason or another, but this one is a must read. The characters are amazingly relatable and I absolutely love the relationships the author built throughout the book. There is a focus on family and friendships that permeates the book. It is these relationships that get Olivia through the most difficult situations she is forced to face.
Olivia is a determined, independent protagonist who is the polar opposite of her new college roommate, but they find a middle ground and bond quickly. Olivia has secrets though and she holds most of her life close to the vest for fear of being found out. She doesn't want anyone to know what a fraud she really is, though the story behind the story is what drives her decisions. Brax is an unexpected intrusion into her new life and she is warned off of him by anyone who feels the need to tell her about his reputation as a player, both on and off the baseball field. He is relentless in his pursuit of Olivia and slowly shows her a side he doesn't let anyone else see. He's a tough, hardened man who's got walls up for a reason.
He begins to chip away at Olivia's walls, but people from her past begin to pop up, forcing her to face things she'd been fighting against. Her ex is there, egging on Brax and her roommate is threatening him whenever he is around, so much so it is a miracle she is able to focus at school. She works hard at the planetarium and keeps her ties to home strong. I loved her family and the way they supported each other through so much turmoil. Brax is the complete opposite and doesn't have the sense of family she does, but he wants it badly and looks for it in his teammates.
Both of them have secrets that could tear them apart. These secrets are the crux of the story and created a rush of emotions for me as a reader. I experienced some true belly laughs at their bantering and then a good hard cry that led to a quiet reflective moment for me personally. This author has the ability to draw you in and get you so involved in the story that you are there with the characters. You are right there with them the whole time. Excellent story telling abilities and well written novel. I'm hoping for more books that tell me what happens to the characters or builds other stories between the other characters.
