Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.
iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.
Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice...
This is the much anticipated novel from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, by JR Ward. While the Brothers are an integral part of the story, it focuses on The Shadows who have been a presence in each and every novel. One Shadow in particular is the hero and it is a story a long time coming. Trez met his Mate in a previous book, but he feels he is not good enough for her because of his lengthy and sordid history. Besides his transgressions with human females and the seedy underworld of Caldwell, Trez was promised as a child to the princess of his people. The arranged marriage/mating has loomed large over his life since he and his brother, iAm, escaped their culture's world. They knew the time would come to return and live up to the promise made, but it seems to have come all too soon. Trez feels his life is null and void, but he's found his match in every way and doesn't want to leave her. Serena is a Chosen who has been holding onto a secret that could bring Trez to his knees.
The Brothers are ever present in the novel and we get to watch Rhage as he struggles with the reality of how fragile life is and how lucky he is to have been given a second change with his Shellan, Mary. The stress Trez is under has an impact on everyone in the mansion and even the powers Trez has cannot stop the inevitable. Unfortunately, the difficult situation they have to struggle with don't stop the threats that constantly surround the Brotherhood including the Bastards and the Lessers. They can't take time to focus only on Trez and Serena, even though they all wish they could. When it comes time for all the puzzle pieces to come together, there are several unexpected twists.
I have been a fan of the BDB for years and this book solidified it. I have to admit to reading a few reviews before picking up the book. Several were very angry and negative because they didn't like the outcome or it wasn't what they expected. I think that is the best part about the book. It didn't end the way I WANTED it to. It ended the way it was supposed to and left the world of the BDB open for so many more stories. I cried like a baby throughout most of the book. Trez was vulnerable and demonstrated his worthiness over and over again. Serena, for her part, demonstrated how deserving she was of Trez. New characters were introduced and I am anticipating the next book in the series! It will be a long wait.
