In Stacey Kennedy’s steamy paranormal romance novel, a rookie guardian sworn to combat the undead risks life and love in a world of violence, witchcraft, and seduction.
Trained as an Elite Guardian and witch, Nexi Jones has lost her family and she’s hell-bent on making sure she doesn’t lose anyone else. At least she has Kyden, her smoldering hot partner who’s been there for her every step of the way. But just as Nexi thinks she’s done mourning, tragedy strikes the Otherworld when a fellow guardian is murdered by a group of rogue vampires. Drawn into their dangerous games, she and Kyden trek into the Earthworld to hunt down a killer—and Nexi alone will be put to the ultimate test.
Although Kyden knows that Nexi must fight her own battles, his guardian instincts are raging as he struggles to keep her close. The ruthlessness of these vampires is like nothing he’s ever seen. And at their helm is the black witch Astoria, a demon with one burning desire: to shed blood in the name of vengeance. What troubles Kyden even more, though, is the warlock lurking in the shadows. Let the devil do his worst . . . all Kyden can do is love and protect Nexi until his last breath.

What a great fantasy read. I truly am loving these worlds that exist within our own. Magic and Mayhem is correct. We’ve been duped folks. The atrocities in the world have been conducted by rogue vampires, werewolves and demons, or so says Stacey Kennedy.
Witches Be Burned is the second installment of the Magic and Mayhem series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Though the intense physical relationship between Kyden and Nexi is developed in the first installment, the give and take of their verbal sparring makes you feel as if you haven’t missed anything at all.
I’m not sure how I felt about the cast of characters, Nexi and Kyden included. We are introduced to many Otherworldly beings including Alastar, Zade, Haven, Finn, Astoria, Zia, the Mistress of Witches and of course Mistress Vampires Thalia and Ellery. I really think I like the Mistress Vampires the best. Ruthlessly intelligent they ruled with manicured nails and a tendency to kill whomever they were threatened by.
In the beginning we learn that in book one, Nexi kills the evil vampire Lazarus using fire magic that almost killed her in the process. Now, in book two, revenge is sweet according to Astoria good witch gone for cookies on the darkside. Only well, things don’t turn out exactly as she had planned thanks to a dark, mysterious stranger. Magnus, the bad boy Lord of the Underworld, rules the demon infested moon, aka where demons run free wanting to get out and feed on the human population. Turning down the very convincing proposal, Nexi has set herself up to fight a sexual onslaught as well as a magical one from Magnus, but that will all be in the next installment of the Mayhem & Magic series.
