Leslie: Tyler, one of the first questions I like to ask to those who write M/M is how did you choose to write within this genre? What made you decide to take This course other than "traditional” or M/F romance, paranormal, or erotica?
Tyler: I got hooked on a romance on my favorite soap opera(LOL). That made me explore books that were out there, and I was instantly drawn to the genre. I
Hardly ever read M/F now, unless it's a friend. I started writing fanfiction for the couple from my soap, but I didn't use them. They were already set with their personalities that I couldn't work with them so I made up my own characters using the soap as a background. I had such a huge fan base and people longing for more, that I decided to try an original to publish. Thankfully, it worked out. :) But my fanfiction men are getting new life, because I love them, in a new novel series. They will be the same characters with new life and obviously no soap opera themes. lol.
Leslie: I know your books are in a series, do you find that gives you an edge over other M/M authors with just single book publication? Also, what made you just jump into a series from the beginning?
Tyler: No not at all. I don't believe it gives me an edge at all. I believe single books can do just as well. I'm one of those people that want more from characters, so I write that way. I guess that's why I jumped into the series. I did end my AOD books in a way that I could leave it as a standalone if it didn't go over well, but to my surprise and thankfully readers loved my vampires and I can write more :) Silver & Black, I always knew would be series. Also, I have another series with 3 books called the Change series(Book one: Struggle
Book two: Security Book three: Serenity. I do have a few standalone books in mind as well <3
Leslie: Do you plan your books out, or do you let the story just come to you as the characters begin to take over and create a life of their own?
Tyler: Kind of both. I let my characters talk and show me their path, but I do have a basic outline in my head, but sometimes it will take a turn.
Leslie: Who are your main inspirations when it comes to sparking your creativity? Would you say they are fellow authors, fans, street teams, friends, family?
Tyler: Hmm, I would say friends and fans. :) I draw inspiration from a lot of things and people.
Leslie: Let's talk about the first book you wrote! What made you decide to write it, and take the leap to publish it? Also, what advice do you have for those writers who are on the verge of publishing and have yet to submit their work?
Tyler: I originally started writing Silver & Black and then Zander, My blind vampire, popped in my head and wouldn't leave until I wrote his story. I finished that one first. After encouragement from friends, I decided to try and publish. A leap.... that's what it was. A leap of faith in myself. Advice for newbies: Just love what you do. Write for yourself and you'll never be disappointed. And never stop trying, use a denial as a stepping stone to improve your craft and keep submitting. You'll get there.... and friend me on Facebook, I love helping any way I can lol.
Leslie: Final question(s)… so, I guess I will make this one count! Which book are you most proud of so far? Is there anything exciting planned for the future?
Tyler: Oh, that's like picking your favorite child lol. I am proud of all my work, but I guess Silver & Black is what took me to number one which was an amazing feeling. Lots planned for the future: Finishing Silver & Black series, Finishing the Angel of Darkness series, and I'm excited to see where my Change series goes. <3
***Bonus*** If you can, describe to us a typical writing day!
Do I get a prize for answering this lol :) Typical day in the life of Tyler May...
I write in the morning mostly when my kids are still in bed. I have a bipolar child and he is manic most of the time, so it's getting harder and harder to find time to myself and my characters, so there is no typical day. It's all new every day. I steal time when I can.
Thank you Leslie for having me! I had a great time.
