Getting caught reading Fifty Shades of Grey in the parking lot at work wasnât the best way to meet her boss. A boss she didnât know she had. A boss who now had the job she had been waiting to apply for (and win) for the past year.
So Lydia Charles was having a very bad day. And it was only 7:32 a.m.
Tap tap tap. She looked up, startled, to find a pair of bright green eyes, shaded by a hand, peering in the window of her little red car. He caught the book cover and smirked.
Oh, screw off, she thought, shoving her car key in the ignition and turning it on so she could roll down the window. As if it werenât bad enough being caught reading Mommy Porn (and she wasnât even a mom), her last few minutes of freedom before enslavement as a corporate drone were being bothered by some anonymous guy.
Light brown hair with a nice wave to it and those crazy-green eyes. A perfect nose. Broad shoulders set off by one hand on his forehead, one on his hip, making his forearms pop a bit, the muscles from neck to shoulder joint stretching like an athleteâs. It was like looking at one of those guys on television, an actor in a show you watch not for the plot, but for the eye candy with a spark of smarts and wit.
If he told her he was a firefighter or a detective, sheâd believe him. He had the look of a man who takes care of himself because he has to in order to function well at his hands-on job.
He works out, she surmised as the window scrolled down. Boring business-casual uniform of Dockers and a button-down shirt. Couldnât see his shoes but she guessed something from Landâs End.
Middle management.
Which was one step above her. Gritting her teeth, she wondered what this was about.

âItâs ten forty-five, almost time for the Brooks Bomb. I told Payne on Friday that this would be your first day back but he had meetings out of the office all morning.â I said.
I turned to head back to my office but stopped as Morgana yelled out for me. âMaybe Iâll take an early lunch. You up for it?â
I was about to tell her no, that I had some work that needed to get done when the elevator doors opened and out walked the last person I wanted to see, ever, Edgar.
Then I would be forced to talk to him about the new hire for his department. Something easily done via email. Instead of face-to-face where I would have to try desperately to control my hormones. It was hard to not turn into a giggling mess with his deep voice acting like a Siren song. I always tried to be aloof, but I had a feeling he didnât care anyway.
Before he saw me, I turned back toward Morgana and nodded my head. âSounds great.â
âOkay, letâs go. Oh wait, is that Edgar? Hey, Edgar.â
I was surprised by how fast Morgana could move considering her height. She was like a red blur blazing past me and before I knew it, she had Edgar deep in conversation. His perfectly sculpted blond hair just brushed the tops of his ears as he ran his fingers through them.
He had long hair when I first started to work here, but last year he cut it. I appreciated both styles, but I missed his long hair. Something about it made me want to run my fingers through it, fist it in my fingers, and scream âmineâ to anyone who passed.
I sounded barbaric. And sad. Mostly sad.
Holding my ground, I refused to move closer, not on principle because what was I arguing about? Lunch? No, I was hungry, but I lacked the strength to resist Edgarâs charm. Especially when he smiled and those dimples appeared.
Dimples of sin I called them. I wanted to lick them so much.
âHey, Evaleen, Edgar is going to join us for lunch.â Morgana waved me over with happiness radiating out of her pores. I wish I could glow with happiness. The only time I glowed was after I had danced a few songs at a club. Also, my makeup usually melted by then, and my pit stains were large enough by that point that tadpoles had been known to form, even when I wore a tank top.
What Iâm saying was I got swamp pits but, hey, I glowed.
Edgarâs dimples were on full debauchery mode. That was, until he saw me. I guess Morgana left that part out when she invited him to lunch. He probably would have declined the offer if he knew I would be there.
âDreary Evaleen Bechmann? No, thank you,â heâd say. I was always surprised when he knew my name considering how unhappy he appeared around me.
It wasnât just his dwindling smile but how his eyes gazed at anything but me. Like he was trying to find an escape from the worst thing ever, me.
âGreat.â
It wasnât great. It especially wasnât wonderful when Morgana conveniently stood by the elevator buttons when we were moving down to the bottom floor, forcing Edgar and me to stand next to each other. I could smell his cologne.
His mouth watering, manly man scent.
I took deep breaths, not because I was about to hyperventilate (but that was an idea to get out of this lunch), but because I wanted to inhale all of him.
My mouth watered and I knew my neck was red without even glancing into the reflection of the metal elevator doors.
I turned my head to face the wall and tried to fill my lungs with non-sex god air, but it wasnât working. Perhaps if I scooted toward the wall, inching farther away from him, I wouldnât want to lick him so much?
Thankfully, I didnât have to make that decision as the elevator dinged and opened on the ground floor. Cool, platonic air breezed around me and I began to feel human again.
That was until he placed his hand on the small of my back to guide me out of the elevator, causing my lady parts to spasm uncontrollably. I think they were having a seizure from too much hotness.
I coughed. Actually, I tried to suppress an eruption of humiliating giggles that would have embarrassed twelve-year-old girls, with a cough.
It worked. He dropped his hand and the lower half of my body went into a deep depression. The top half of my body felt relief tinged with bitterness.
The chill of the Chicago air solidified me. What if Iâm not sexy or beautiful enough for him to notice like he did every other woman he came in contact with? He slept around anyway. Even if he did seduce me, I would just end up heartbroken anyway.
âHere we are. Chuckâs Sausage Shack. I am so thankful I can get a good sausage right next door anytime I want.â Morgana smiled as she held the door for us.
âI sure do love to suck on tubular meat during my breaks at work,â I said without hesitation.
That time I coughed for real. I hadnât meant for that to come out of my mouth. It was there in my head and then my mouth decided it was the perfect time to give it a voice. I blame Morgana. Who says they are thankful to get good sausage? She was practically begging me to embarrass myself like that.
âLetâs hope,â Edgar said. My eyes narrowed at him but he had turned from me.
Cool as always. Nothing fazed him, not even a frumpy co-worker making blatant and not very good penis jokes.
He was just casually glancing around the place scoping out a table.
âCrap. Looks like I got to head back to work. I just got a text from Mr. Payne telling me he needs to meet with me since itâs my first day back. Sorry.â Morgana frowned, shoving her phone back into her purse and pushing out the door.
After watching the door close, I turned to Edgar. He was staring at me, grimacing.
âLook, if you have something to do we can just order food to go,â I said, trying to offer him a way out. It was obvious back at the office he was only agreeing to lunch because he thought it would be him and Morgana. Iâm not blind. Morgana was gorgeous and sexy and exactly what a player like Edgar would be into. I think itâs a little shitty that he would go after someone his best friend, Payne, was obviously into, but that was none of my business.
Now we can order food for lunch since we are already here and then go our separate ways.
Edgar smirked. His dimples deepening as his gaze drifted languidly to my lips. âNow why would I miss out on the chance of watching you suck on some tubular meat?â
My lady parts were seizing again.

Hansel never asked to be a hero. He never wanted to fall in love with Rapunzel, Queen of the East. He didn’t ask to be raised by Gothel the Wretch, and he certainly never wanted to be credited for her arrest. But more than any of that, Hansel never wanted to lie: but he did. He lied about everything. He thought that he was done with it all when he and his sister Gretel retreated into the woods to reclaim their land, but he should have known better.
Years later, Rapunzel’s guards knock at his door, and they say the words he hoped that he would never hear: Gothel has escaped. As he and Gretel take refuge inside Rapunzel’s castle in the eastern capitol of Hildebrand, Hansel is thrust back into everything he never wanted in the first place: his lies, his legend, and his lust. In the wake of it all, he knows that Gothel has escaped to finish what she started. She is out to make sure that the Sleeping Beauty never wakes, and that Grimm suffocates under her blanket of thorn and vine. In order to find Gothel and save the kingdom, Hansel and Gretel must look for fact in a land of fairy-tale by following a trail of grisly murders, a girl in a red cape, and a powerful little man who can’t stand the sound of his own name.
As they search for answers, Hansel finds that he isn’t the only liar in Grimm, and that there may be a traitor among them of royal proportion.
Excerpt
The winter storm began with a scream that split the trees. It echoed throughout the woods and birds fled into the sky, disappearing like smoke behind gray clouds. Hansel looked off in the direction of the disturbance—but it was silent again. There was something menacing about the renewed absence of life that hung over him. He strung his bow, keeping it close to his side, and surveyed the area around him. He was met only with the familiar stillness of the trees and dead foliage beneath.
“We should go,” he said, trying to disguise the urgency in his voice.
His sister, Gretel, hesitated. “Someone screamed.”
“I know,” he said. “That’s why we need to go.”
Gretel scanned the tree line and ran her fingers through her hair. Grabbing her hand, Hansel pulled her in the direction they’d come from. The woods were dangerous, especially on the cusp of winter. They were close to the Southern Thickets—the part of the forest overrun with briar and weed, where all of Grimm’s most dangerous creatures lived—and Hansel knew that if someone was screaming, they had a good reason.
They made their way back to The Path in silence. Hansel was wary of crunching leaves under his boot, afraid to wake the forest. Seconds after they turned around, he felt something whiz past him on both sides of his head. He hoped they were fireflies, bustling about the tops of trees, cutting through the coldness that crept over them. He followed the sparkling speckles with his eyes. They moved with purpose, cracking branches and creasing clouds, spinning wildly. Hansel was probably the only person in Grimm who was ever disappointed to see a flock of fairies, but fireflies meant it was summer, and he longed to see summer again.
Before they blinked out of sight, they spoke to him. Tens of wistful, unison whispers in his ears said: Help…the girl needs help. Hansel looked at Gretel, wondering if she heard them, too. He didn’t have to ask. She bounded back in the opposite direction and drew the skinning knife she kept sheathed at her waist. Hansel cursed, taking off after her. No sooner than he’d kicked off the ground, another mortifying scream shook the woods. He followed close behind Gretel, dodging trees and leaping over the underbrush. There was a third scream, and then a fourth; louder and closer than any before.
He didn’t know what to do. As they ran, the woods shrank around them until the sun no longer broke through the gaps between the trees. Hansel knew they were going to die. No one made it deep into the thickets and lived. It was home to godless monsters; giants, goblins—the creatures of the dark who scarcely bothered with humans, until they were crossed. Hansel struggled to keep up with his sister. Where he was cautious, she was fearless, and where she was cautious, he was safest. He looked up and was surprised to see hundreds of fairies lighting their path. Each second, more poured in from the sky until there was an army over them.
Gretel stopped abruptly, causing Hansel to trip and roll a few steps downhill. He didn’t think long enough to register pain. As he found his footing, Gretel climbed down the incline and stood beside him. His first instinct was to go back the way they’d come, but he was awestruck. They stood on the threshold of life and death, where the woods became the Southern Thickets. It was like a scar across the ground, stretching from one end of the world to the next, a final warning to those brave enough to pass into the curse. Even the fairies were still, their glow dimmed by the wicked magic ahead.
Hansel was relieved to see that there were no longer trees; they’d been replaced by a wall of bramble, too large and thick to allow passage. They were surrounded by the purplish-blue tint of twilight, thorns as sharp as daggers to their throats in front of them and crooked, mossy trees behind them. Once, when Hansel lived in the city, he’d visited his parents’ corpses in the graveyard. They were buried in a public sepulcher maintained by the city to ensure that if a family was unwilling or unable to buy a plot for their deceased, their corpses wouldn’t be left to rot and attract the attention of wildlife. Standing just before the thickets reminded Hansel of that day—the day when he stood at the maw of death and was so close he could feel himself slipping away.
Gretel looked behind them. Hansel hoped she’d given up, and maybe she had. He almost smiled. But one final, thankless cry echoed past the briar, stirring the fairies. Gretel squinted, determined. That scream, Hansel knew, was the epitaph on their gravestones. The fairies swarmed them, and he was swallowed in a rainbow of color, cascading like a waterfall upon him. He couldn’t see anything but the swirling light of the fairy flock, spinning faster and faster around him, tugging at his shirt and creating a whirlwind. He felt weightless. His stomach churned and he felt dizzy. When the fairies cleared, he could see why—he was high in the air, flying over the Southern Thickets.
For a moment, he forgot about the screams and that he was headed into danger. He was soaring. Gretel was flying just below him, her arms spread wide, her hair flailing. Seeing Grimm from the air was both breathtaking and appalling. He expected to see the land as it once was, alive and vibrant. Instead, it was a sickly beige with winter and the end of the curse. The world around them was devoid of life. Most of the animals had fled years earlier, knowing the world was about to change, and those that remained were tucked safely away somewhere beneath them.
The thickets looked exactly as he’d always imagined. From above, he saw nothing but briar and bramble etched across the uneven terrain. They gained speed, and the cold air blasted his cheeks. He was grateful to have the cold in that moment to waken his senses and remind him that he was still alive, that he and Gretel were in danger. He sucked in a breath as they flew farther away from home, and against the still-setting sun that formed the silhouette of a castle, jagged and broken. The Sleeping Castle—he knew it from legend—the home where the rightful royalty of Grimm still rested, dead to the world but not in definition, suffering eternally at the hands of a vengeful witch. All he could make out was one tower, freed from the clutches of the thorn like the arm of an old beggar, trying to hoist himself out of the darkness. The top of the tower stuck at a point against the sunlight like a bony finger fighting for liberation.
It felt like they were flying only moments before he felt himself descending. Hansel looked below. There was a tiny clearing in the briar—a hole in the patchwork—and inside that hole he saw a spot of red. His eyes widened when he realized what was happening; it was a little girl, and she was running for her life. Sooner than he anticipated, the fairies dropped him and he fell into the clearing. They placed Gretel gracefully on the ground next to him and charged back up into the sky in one harmonious motion, disappearing into the briar. The girl stared at them in wonder, Hansel standing close to Gretel. It was suddenly dark, and Hansel knew it was because they were in a place so sinister that even the sunlight refused to pass through. The girl Hansel had seen from the sky was covered in bloody scratches, as if she’d been running through the thorns. Her face was dirty and streaked in muddy tears. She tried to speak to them, but she was silenced by the rustling of the vines behind her.
She yelped, running to them for help. Gretel took her in her arms and cupped her hand over her mouth, quieting her. Hansel trembled, pulling the bowstring back so far he worried it would snap. The figure of a large man appeared on the other side of the curtain of briar, causing the girl to cry harder. He made his best attempt to look imposing, but he was frightened. The man stepped into the clearing, dressed all in black, his hood casting a shadow over his face so that all Hansel could see was a pair of dull, white eyes. At first, Hansel thought the red-orange coating on the figure’s machete was rust, but as the man moved closer, he recognized it as the color of dried blood.
“Who are you?” Hansel asked.
It was like standing in front of death itself—silent, ominous, and terrifying.
Hansel stood rigid, his arrow pointed at the man’s chest. He hated the idea of killing someone, but he knew that his bow would take action before his head did if it was given the opportunity. The man’s chest rose, fell, but didn’t rise again. That was when Hansel knew it was time to let go of the string. It was too late. The hooded figure leaped out of the way just before the arrow left the bow, and as Hansel went to re-string it, he disappeared back into the thickets. Hansel stretched his bow into a V and focused his aim, in case the man returned.
Gretel helped the girl to her feet. “Are you all right?”
She wore a bright cloak that canvassed her body like a suit of armor, bright yet all-concealing. Hansel didn’t know what to make of her. She embodied adolescence, but exuded effortless maturity as if at war with herself. Wine and wildflowers protruded from her basket, peeking surreptitiously back at him. She was a walking contradiction, and that made him anxious.
“I think so,” the girl replied, using her cloak, which was made of some sort of fabric that Hansel couldn’t name but knew was expensive, to wipe her face. “Thank you for saving me.”
“Who was that man?” Hansel asked.
The girl hesitated. She stepped beside Hansel and followed his gaze out into the thickets.
“He was no man,” she said. “He was a wolf.”
“A wolf?” Hansel asked.
She nodded. “He walks like a man, but he’s a wolf, I swear to it. He tackled me back there and started sniffing me and snarling like a beast. His breath smells like dung and whiskey. It frightened me, so I ran off.”
Hansel and Gretel exchanged looks. Gretel furrowed her brows, dumbstruck.
“But why did he come after you?” Gretel asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?” Hansel asked. “How do you not know? Do you find you’re often being chased by hooded man-wolves, or is today a special day?”
The girl seemed put off by the question. “Do you normally fly with the fairies?”
“Of course not,” Hansel said.
“So today must be special for all of us,” she said, slyly.
Gretel broke the tension. “What’s your name?”
“My name’s Ceara,” the girl replied with a smile that soured Hansel’s mood. She spoke to no one in particular. “But some people call me Little Red Cap because of my cape. It’s made of the finest silk in the East.” She offered the tail of her cape to them.
Gretel reached her hand out and felt the fabric, rubbing it between her fingers. “It’s lovely,” she mumbled.
“My gran made it for me when I was younger. I was always running about in the woods and she worried I would get lost. That’s why the cape is red…I’m easier to spot that way.”
Hansel dropped the bow to his side. It just so happened that he and Gretel knew quite a bit about being lost in the woods.
“Do you know how to get back to The Path from here?” he asked Ceara.
The Path was the clearest, safest route through the woods. It was a trail worn in the grass by the boots of travelers and kings alike; a clear, oppressive force that divided Grimm into four regions. The Path was the safest, most direct route to any place in the entire kingdom.
Ceara’s smile faded. She wiped the tears from her face, using her cloak to remove the dirt from her cheeks. “Of course I do,” she said, gesturing toward the vines. “It’s just a few steps this way.”
“You mean through the thorns?” Hansel asked.
She rolled her eyes. “Unless you plan on asking the fairies for another lift, there’s really no other way.”
“I thought it was impossible to pass through the thickets.” As he spoke, he stared at the thorns. He imagined slicing his leg open, or accidentally impaling himself. He squirmed.
Ceara giggled at him. “Just because the whole kingdom says it’s impossible, doesn’t mean it is.”
Gretel laughed at him as well, shrugging as she passed him. Ceara parted the vines carefully and let Gretel pass through. After Gretel disappeared into the thickets, Ceara held the vines apart for him. “Go on.”
Right then, Hansel knew he wasn’t going to like Ceara.

He agreed to give her his genes. He didn’t expect to lose his heart…Here comes THE BABY PROJECT by Miranda Liasson…
About THE BABY PROJECT Liz Kingston spends her life delivering babies and longs for one of her own. All she needs is someone with fabulous genetic material. Who better to ask than her sexy ex-fling, who has no interest in ever settling down or being a father. International correspondent Grant Wilbanks loves danger and travelling the world. But nothing in all this Brit’s experience could have prepared him for the way a torrid affair with Liz makes him feel. When she asks for his assistance, he figures he can help her out with a simple donation. No strings, no emotions, just…test-tube science. But this simple favor gives them both more than they ever bargained for. Grant agrees to her terms, but stepping away gets harder and harder because the more time they spend together, the more he finds himself falling…and losing the battle to safeguard his heart. Pre-Order Your Copy Now! On Sale in Digital: September 4, 2017 Amazon Excerpt: Liz wanted him for the most unflattering reason: because she knew he’d flee without a doubt. “So you want me to donate my sperm—into a test tube?” Grant could hardly say it. He could hardly believe he was having this discussion. The idea was utterly ludicrous. “This would be a one-time thing, the perfect arrangement. You’d give your sample and walk away. Easy-peasy.” “You mean create a child and walk away?” Somehow, his brain felt numb. He was having difficulty wrapping his head around it. “Well, I wouldn’t want you to think of it like that. You’d donate a sample and I’d do the rest. You’d do it as a favor to me. No strings attached. No responsibilities, no worries, and no claim to fatherhood. There’d be no need to tell anyone that you’re the father. And Dottie will be moving away soon, so there’d be no need to say anything to her, either. You’d just go back across the world to your job and forget about me. Simple, yes?” He struggled not to physically wince at her words. How little she thought of him. But then, he’d given her no other way to think. He’d been a no-show. He plowed his fingers through his hair. God, he should never have come here. What had he been thinking, getting tangled up with her again? The intensity of his feelings for her had caught him by surprise—all it had taken was one glance at those big, dark, pleading eyes, her lovely full lips, her vivaciousness, her compassion, her sarcasm… He’d known he was in trouble from the second she’d tossed her tea at him. The same stirring, the same wanting that he’d fought so hard to forget, it had all come avalanching back. And God help him, he wanted her now, just as he had on all those hot, humid African nights. Yes, he’d admit it—he’d wanted to see her. To know how she’d been. To say he was sorry. What a fool he was to think that that would be enough. Yet what could he really offer her? He was at the top of his game as a reporter, recognizable around the world, always ready to go anywhere at a moment’s notice. He had no family, no home. He was as domesticated as a Bengali tiger. “So will you consider it?” she asked. He opened his mouth to say no. “I desperately want this, Grant. It’s my last chance to become a mother.” Damn her for turning to him with those big doe eyes, with that pleading look that gutted him. That had the effect of rendering him utterly helpless. If he had any sense at all, he’d flee into the house and take cover immediately. This seemingly simple request was surely fraught with a million complications. If he was wise, he’d simply say no immediately and cut this ridiculous discussion off at the pass. He tried to avoid eye contact but like a wreck on the side of the road, he couldn’t turn away. The answer was no. It would always be no. But he couldn’t bear seeing the hopeful expression she wore. One look at her and he understood down to his marrow exactly what he was seeing in her eyes. Longing, yearning, desperation. She was asking him for something so simple and yet so life-changingly complex. He’d have to disappoint her, of course. He’d be out of his mind to say yes. The word no formed in his throat, one breath away from being expelled through his lips. “Let me think about it,” he found himself saying instead. To most people, princes, princesses, counts and dukes are found only in the pages of the most famous of fairytales. Crowns, priceless jewels and gilded thrones belong only in childhood dreams. But for some, these frivolous fancies are truth. For some, they are real life. On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, people have always treated me as someone special. All because of my ancestral name and legacy. All because of a connection I share to our home country’s most important family of all. I am Caresa Acardi, the Duchessa di Parma. A blue blood of Italy. I was born to marry well. And now the marriage date is set. I am to marry into House Savona. The family that would have been the royals had Italy not abolished the monarchy in 1946. But to the aristocrats of my home, the abolition means nothing at all. The Savonas still hold power where it counts most. In our tight-knit world of money, status and masked balls, they are everything and more. And I am soon to become one of them. I am soon to become Prince Zeno Savona’s wife… … or at least I was, until I met Achille. And everything changed.
I opened the window beside me and stared at the illuminated entrance. I swallowed hard and placed my empty glass on the bar. Metal groaned, breaking through the twilight, as the massive black wrought-iron gates began to open. The limo slowly pulled onto the property’s lane, and I drank in the thick forest that shielded the estate. I inhaled the freshness of the lush green trees. The unpolluted sky was thick with stars—not a single cloud in sight. A few minutes later, the thick woods cleared, and I gasped. Acres and acres of gold and green vineyards covered the landscape. The scents of plump grapes and damp soil permeated the warm air. I closed my eyes. It reminded me of being a child. It brought me back to the days before I was taken to New York. I could still feel the heat of the Emilia-Romagna sun on my face, the deep smell of olives, grapes and flowers drifting in the breeze as I ran around our Parma estate. I smiled a nostalgic smile and allowed my eyes to drift open again. I rested my arms on the window and leaned my chin on them as the limo drove on. There were several small villas peppered over the landscape, their lights twinkling in the distance. They must have been the winemakers’ residences. It was not only the Bella Collina merlot that was made on this land; other reds were too—particularly the Chianti from the region’s finest Sangiovese grapes. The Bella Collina olive oil was also up there with the best. But nothing compared to the famed merlot. The limo turned right, and my breath caught in my throat. I lifted my head and stared disbelievingly at the property ahead. Bella Collina was a veritable Palace of Versailles tucked away in the Umbrian wilderness. “Mio Dio,” I whispered as I took in the imposing stone structure, the sweeping steps and the vast number of windows set in the building’s walls. Large pillars of red-veined marble flanked the entrance. Cypress trees framed the estate as if it were the shining star of a fine Renaissance painting. Sculptures of famed Savona monarchs of old stood proudly on the manicured lawns, and strategically placed lighting illuminated the sheer perfection of every piece of topiary. As a child, I had been to the Palazzo Savona in Florence. It was widely regarded to be one of the finest estates in all of Italy, if not western Europe. But this . . . this . . . there were no words. It was perfectly placed, as if it had always been there. As if it had grown naturally from the Umbrian earth just as sure as the vines and woods that kept this architectural treasure hidden from view.

She didn’t make it very far, though, because she ran right into a brick wall. Well, it wasn’t really a brick wall. It just felt like one. Large, hard and uncompromising. But breathing. Which brick walls definitely didn’t do. “Clara Campbell. Fancy meeting you here.” Clara blinked and stared up into Alex Donnelly’s forest-green eyes and felt a strange response that seemed to originate in her stomach and travel upward to her chest, where it twisted, hard and sharp. After looking at Asher, his understated physique and much softer brown gaze, the sight of Alex was jarring. Too intense. Too masculine. Too a lot of things. His dark hair wasn’t military short anymore. It was long enough to hang into his face. He pushed it back off his forehead and again, something twisted, low and deep inside of her. And then it wasn’t only his features that seemed too sharp. It was seeing him at all. She had been studiously avoiding him ever since he had moved back to Copper Ridge. If ever she’d caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of her eye, she’d gone the other way. The last time she’d seen him up close had been at Jason’s funeral. Pain washed through her, canceling out all of the good Asher feelings from only a moment before. No wonder she’d had such a strong, immediate response to the sight of Alex. The man was dragging a bunch of her baggage in with him. Another thing she liked about Asher. He was separate from her life. From her pain. Alex was all wound up in it. “Hi, Alex,” she said, clutching her coffee cup tight, the warmth bleeding through to her palms. Which she was grateful for at the moment since her stomach had gone ice-cold at the sight of him. “I’ve been meaning to stop by,” he said. “That’s really okay,” she said, and she meant it. More than okay. Jason’s death meant that she was alone. Both of her parents were already gone. They’d had children later in life, and when her mother had gotten sick, her father had done everything he could to make his wife comfortable as her health declined. She’d died when Clara was twelve. And there had been no amount of preparation that could soften the blow. No amount of expectedness that could have made it feel less like a giant, ugly hand had reached into their life and wrenched the beauty out of it, leaving nothing but a dark abyss. WHY I WRITE Since I was eight I have been writing stories that capture the adventures in my head and the characters strong enough and flawed enough to have them. When I look at an empty field I see a formidable citadel. When I meet a vulnerable old man, I greet an emeritus warrior. When I walk through city streets I feel dimensions hiding around every turn. It has been my lifelong passion to explore these worlds that reveal the pain of loneliness, the joy or self-actualization, and the hope of magic. ABOUT ME I grew up in a place called Potter Valley where the Milky Way is held aloft by a circle of mountains and the central business district consists of a bait store and a saloon. At 19 I moved alone to London and spent the next ten years exploring the world, even becoming an Australian citizen, before I returned to California and found a new home in Los Angeles. My world revolves around my two wee children and my love of travel. MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND EDUCATION My days are spent in an office overlooking Los Angeles International Airport where I work as a Director of Marketing for a data center technology firm, which wouldn’t make you think I had an MFA in film with an emphasis on writing from Chapman University. However, I also have degrees in visual communications and global communications, which allowed me to work for some of the finest technology firms in the world. In my spare time I have penned six screenplays, four stage plays, an opera libretto, numerous short stories, and five manuscripts for novels. My heart lies with my manuscripts, which are focused on YA and New Adult audiences and range in subject from Vikings in Iceland to Knights Templar in Italy to Aborigine mysticism in Australia to shapeshifters in Los Angeles. Nineteen. Thereâs something about that number; it not only brought us together, bonding us forever, it also played a hand in tearing us apart.
The nineteenth of January 1996. Iâll never forget it. It was the day we met. I was seven and she was six. It was the day she moved in next door, and the day I developed my first crush on a girl.
Exactly nineteen years later, all my dreams came true when she became my wife. She was the love of my life. My soul mate. My everything. The reason I looked forward to waking up every morning.
Then tragedy struck. Nineteen days after we married, she was in an accident that would change our lives forever. When she woke from her coma, she had no memory of me, of us, of the love we shared.
I was crushed. She was my air, and without her I couldnât breathe.
The sparkle that once glistened her eyes when she looked at me was gone. To her, now, I was a stranger. I had not only lost my wife, I had lost my best friend.
But I refused to let this tragedy be the end of us. Thatâs when I started to write her letters, stories of our life. Of when we met. About the happier times, and everything we had experienced together.

CHAPTER ONE
Jemma
Itâs a wet and dreary morning is the first thing I hear when the radio booms to life, alerting me to the fact itâs time to get up.
Dreary doesnât even come close. The thought of no longer being able to spend every waking minute with my gorgeous husband has already put a dampener on my day. I canât believe our time off together has come to an end. I hate that I have to go back to work this morning, and leave the little bubble Braxton and I have been living in for the past four weeks.
Right up until the wedding, things were so busy with our careers, building our dream house and organising our special day. Everything combined seemed to take away from us being together. This one-on-one time weâve had since tying the knot was just what we both needed.
âMorning, Mrs Spencer.â
He rolls onto his side, pulling me further into his warm, luscious body. It has been exactly nineteen days since we exchanged wedding vows, and Iâm still floating.
âMorning, Mr Spencer.â I lean my forehead against his. âIâm not ready to go back to work. I canât stand the thought of spending the entire day without you.â
He chuckles as his teeth nip at my pouting lip. âI feel exactly the same way, babe. Our time off has gone way too quick. We should have taken two months off, instead of one.â
Despite him being a constant figure in my daily life, for the past nineteen years, I still get a rush when I think about what our future together holds.
I met Braxton when my parents and I moved in next door. We were just kids, but weâve been inseparable ever since. Heâs my one and only. He always has been, and always will be. Heâs not only the love of my life; heâs my best friend, my soul mate, my forever boy.
Heâs incredibly dreamy, with his movie-star looks. I run my fingers through his sandy blond hair as my eyes roam over his perfectly sculpted face; his big blue eyes pop against his tanned skin. He has a smile that makes my knees weak. His front tooth turns in ever so slightly, but it takes nothing away from his Colgate-worthy smile.
When he realises Iâm checking him out, the sexy grin that I adore appears on his face. It highlights the cute dimple in his left cheek. To this day, he still manages to turn my insides to mush, but itâs his inner beauty that affects me the most.
âI could always call in sick,â I say, perking up for a moment, but in reality I know itâs not possible. I have a big client coming in first thing Monday morning, and I need to prepare.
âIf I didnât have this damn meeting later this morning, Iâd say do it,â he replies, smiling.
âIâm going to miss you.â
âIâm going to miss you too, Jem. The past four weeks have been my kind of heaven.â
I sigh. âIâd give anything to be back in Kauai right now.â
My fingers move from his hair and skim down the side of his face as I speak. The beach has always been our favourite place. Thatâs why we built our dream home overlooking the ocean. The soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore as I drift off to sleep every night, and the sweet smell of sea air first thing in the morning . . . itâs cathartic. Itâs also one of the reasons we chose Hawaiiâa beautiful villa on the majestic shores of Tunnels Beachâas the place to spend the first two weeks of our married life.
âMe too.â He gives me a wistful look. âIâll take you back there over the Christmas break, I promise.â
âIâd like that.â My fingertips dance over his collarbone, before moving across his shoulder. When I run a path down his strong back, he groans.
I sigh again when I think that Christmas is ten months away, but I guess we have the rest of our lives together to create the kind of memories we did in Hawaii.
Untangling my legs from his, I pause briefly. I donât want to leave him. I exhale a drawn-out breath. âI suppose I better jump in the shower.â
âWould you like some company?â
Reaching for me, he rolls onto his back, taking me with him. I laugh when he wiggles his eyebrows. I straddle his waist before covering his mouth with mine. My shower can wait. Making love to my man is much more important.
Sliding forward, I line myself up. His strong hands grip my hips, and we moan in unison as I sink down onto him. My eyes lock with his as I slowly rock my body against him. âI love you, Brax.â
âI love you too, Jem. So much.â
He reaches for my hands, lacing his fingers through mine. Weâve always had such a strong bond, but when weâre connected like this, we become one. Iâll never tire of these feelings he evokes in me.
There are times I feel guilty because together, weâre perfect. None of our friends have the kind of relationship Braxton and I do. What we have is unbreakable. Sometimes my feelings for him overwhelm me. Iâm not sure how either of us would survive without the other.
---
As I rush around putting the finishing touches on my make-up, I catch a glimpse of Braxton in the mirror. Heâs leaning up against the doorframe watching me get ready. Heâs shirtless and wearing a pair of grey sweats that hang low on his hips. My pulse quickens as my eyes rake over his bare chest, and each delicious muscle that defines his torso, from the perfect V just above the waistband, right up to his washboard abs. One of my favourite things to do is watch him work out on the small home gym he set up in the garage. I donât think he even realises how sexy he is. Growing up, he didnât notice the way all the girls swooned over him. But I did.
My eyes move back to his, and the adoring look on his face sends my heart into a flutter. The sheer love I feel for this man consumes every fibre of my being. Itâs euphoric.
âHow long have you been standing there?â I ask as my mouth curves into a smile.
âIâm just admiring my beautiful wife.â I love hearing him call me his wife.
He pushes off the doorframe and stalks towards me. When his arms encircle my waist, he pulls me back into him. A soft moan falls from my mouth as his lips trail a path up my neck. I tilt my head to the side, allowing him better access.
âIâm already running late,â I breathe.
âI wish you didnât have to go.â His warm breath on my skin leaves goosebumps in its wake.
âMe either.â
âThe next eight hours are going to feel like an eternity.â
I sigh in agreement. âI know.â
His tongue glides over the sensitive spot behind my ear, sending shivers down my spine. He did that on purpose. âDonât make any plans for tonight, because Iâm taking you out to dinner.â
âYouâre taking me out? Where?â
âThe Sea Shanty.â He groans as he sucks my earlobe into his mouth.
âWhatâs the special occasion?â
âOur anniversary.â
My eyes fly open to meet his in the mirror. âOur what?â My mind starts to race. What anniversary?
He turns me in his arms so Iâm facing him, and pulls a small black box from his pocket. âI was going to give this to you tonight, but I want you to have it now. Happy nineteenth anniversary, sweetheart.â
My hands tremble slightly as I take hold of the box. Thatâs when I remember that today we have been married for nineteen days, and a huge smile breaks out on my face. The number nineteen has always held special significance for us.
Tears of happiness pool in my eyes as I open the lid. Inside I find a white-gold necklace thatâs holding a diamond-encrusted number-nineteen pendant.
âOh Braxton, itâs beautiful. I love it . . . I love you.â
He smiles as he tucks a lock of hair behind my ear. âI canât wait to spend the rest of my life with you, Jem.â
âSame.â
A lump forms in my throat and I feel like Iâm choking back tears. I use my hand to fan my eyes; I donât have time to redo my make-up.
Taking the box out of my hand, he removes the necklace. âTurn around, and hold up your hair.â I do as he asks, gathering my long brown hair on top of my head so he can fasten the necklace. âPerfect,â he says, planting a soft kiss on my skin at the base of my neck.
My fingertips glide over the pendant as I admire it in the mirror. âThank you . . . Iâll treasure it.â
Sliding his arms around my waist again, he rests his chin on my shoulder, and his eyes meet mine in the mirror. âYou know, Iâve been thinking . . .â
âThat could be dangerous.â
I laugh when he pokes my side.
âI want you to stop taking the pill.â
I feel my heartbeat accelerate as I swing around to face him. âYou do?â
âYes. Itâs time we gave it another try, Jem. I want to see our baby growing inside you.â
I swipe my finger under my eye to catch the stray tear that has fallen. âI want that too, but what about my job? We just took out a second mortgage to build this house . . . we need the money.â
He exhales before continuing. âI know how much your career means to you, but youâre giving so much of yourself to that bastard, Andrew. We both know he doesnât appreciate you. Why donât you think about setting up your own interior design business from home? That way youâd be here to look after our son, and still be able to do what you love.â
âOr our daughter,â I say with a smile.
âAs long as our baby is healthy, I donât care what sex it is.â I bow my head as memories of that day flood my mind. I want this so badly, but Iâm scared.
âCan we talk more about it tonight over dinner? Andrewâs going to chew me out if I donât get to the office soon.â
âHe better not!â
I run my finger over his forehead, trying to flatten out the crinkles of his frown. I love how protective he is. He hates the way my boss treats me, but heâd never interfere because he knows how much I love what I do.
The rain has eased by the time Iâm ready to leave, but Braxton still insists on walking me out so I donât get wet. âBye,â I say reluctantly, when we come to a stop beside my car.
âDonât let Andrew keep you any later than needed.â
âI wonât,â I say, placing my lips against his. âGood luck with your meeting. Theyâre going to love the new design.â
âI hope so.â He opens the driverâs-side door, and moves the umbrella closer to shield me from the rain. âBe careful on the roads, theyâll be slippery.â
âI will. Stop worrying.â
âIâll always worry where youâre concerned, Jem. Itâs my job to look after you.â
I smile up at him once Iâm seated. âI love how much you love me.â
âThatâll never change,â he says, winking, as he closes my car door.
My heart feels heavy as I blow him a kiss and reverse out of the driveway . . . I miss him already.
---
Iâm driving cautiously but still faster than usual on my way to work. I know I shouldnât, considering the roads are slippery from all the rain, but the backlog of work Iâm going to face from being on holidays for a month is making my stomach knot. Just the thought of facing Andrew in one of his moods this morning is quickly undoing all the calm Iâve felt while being away from him. Braxtonâs idea of starting my own business is sounding better by the second.
I smile to myself as I replay his words in my head. My fingertips lightly skim over my stomach. Iâd like nothing more than to have his baby growing inside me again.
âShit,â I mumble to myself when the heavens open up. I turn the wiper speed up to full, but visibility is still poor. I can barely see the car in front of me now. I jump when my phone starts to ring. I grip the wheel tightly with my right hand as I reach across the passenger seat, my hand blindly fumbling in my bag as I try to find it.
I just know that itâs Andrew wondering where I am; I should have been there fifteen minutes ago. My chest tightens just thinking about it.
My eyes leave the road for a split second as I glance down at the screen. I was right, itâs him. As I attempt to accept the call, I hear the loud sound of an angry horn, and the screech of tyres. My head snaps to the left as my body is thrown violently sidewards. The sickening crunching sound of metal is almost deafening.
Images of Braxton and our life together flash through my mind as a crushing sensation consumes the right side of my body. My head connects with the driverâs-side window, and the sound of shattering glass fills my ears.
Oh god. I donât want to die.
âBraxton . . . Braaaax,â I cry out as the world around me stills, and I succumb to the darkness.

Before Jonas could answer, they rounded the corner into the kitchen and stopped in their tracks. Ryan stood in the kitchen pouring a cup of coffee, but everyone else was sitting around the long oak table in the dining area.
Including Rafe.
âGood morning!â Lucia called. âI saved you some pancakes and bacon.â
JJ smiled gratefully at her friend, but Jonas could already see the pink inching up her cheeks. She rarely blushed, and most of the times heâd seen her do it had been over the last few days.
Because of Rafe. She blushed for that bastard.
âThank you. Weâre both starving.â Jonas turned to Lucia, determined to ignore the other side of the room. Until he heard a round of masculine laughter and his eyes were pulled over again.
Rafe smirked.
âI bet. Yo, we get it. Sheâs yours and youâre the only one who can make her scream your name. But I donât think they heard her in New Jersey.â
JJ blushed bright red and dropped the plate of food she was holding on the counter with a clatter. âIâm not hungry.â
âRafe!â Lucia yelled.
Rafe looked slightly chagrined. âCome on blondie, I was just joking,â he yelled after JJâs retreating form. A few seconds later, a door in the hallway closed firmly.
Jonas was across the room before he had a chance to think, and only Oskar stepping in his way stopped his momentum.
âFuck you, man. What are you even doing here?â
âI work here, remember? And my sister lives here.â Rafe drawled lazily, as if the entire situation amused him.
That only infuriated Jonas more. The bastard acted like everything was a joke. Especially considering how long heâd been gone from his sisterâs life. He thought he could flit in and out of his familyâs life with no consequences? Jonas didnât even know the whole story, but he was furious about Rafeâs actions on Luciaâs behalf. Sheâd mourned her brother for years.
âYour sister living here didnât seem to influence your decisions at any other time in your life,â he pointed out.
Like a black cloud had just passed, the temperature in the room dropped a few degrees. Rafe stood slowly. âYou donât know what the fuck youâre talking about.â
âWhy donât you come over here and tell me then,â Jonas sneered.
Rafe laughed. âI think we all remember what happened the last time we fought. Can you see me now?â
Jonas growled and tried to push past Oskar. His eyes had fully recovered from whatever Rafe had thrown at him last year, but just the memory of that shit hurt. Months of built-up frustration were about to be released all at once. Theyâd accepted Rafe because Noah asked them to, but there was only so much a man could take. Even if he died in the attempt, it might be worth it to wipe the smug smile off that assholeâs face temporarily.
âOkay, settle down children. The real enemy is out there.â Noah appeared from somewhere, and a huge hand landed on Jonasâs chest, keeping him immobile. He leaned closer to whisper in Jonasâs ear. âTake a break. Calm down. Iâve got this.â
Jonas clenched his teeth before turning and stalking down the hall. He trusted Noah a hell of a lot. Theyâd walked through fire together, literally, and there was no one else heâd rather have covering his back. But Noah had sure as hell better handle it.
Because if he didnât, Jonas would.

Excerpt:
Being a witness to a robbery shouldn't destroy your entire life, but it certainly wrecked mine. It may not have been so bad if I hadn't have recognized the man holding the gun. The man who shot an innocent man for no reason other than stupidity and greed. His face had been shielded by a ski mask, but that deep baritone gave him away. The moment “Hurry the fuck up or I’ll blow your head off” left his lips, I gasped, uttering his name in what I thought was a silent rebuke. He looked my way and the man behind the register tried to grab the gun.
My world flashed in multiple colors as I watched in horror. The guy’s hand reached out, Jonathan jerked back, and with a twitch of his hand the man's head blew back, a coating of red spraying against the back wall. He was dead. I screamed and Jonathan attacked me. His hand wrapped around my throat, and I fought unsuccessfully to get out of his grip. Some noise distracted him for a moment, and I was able to hit his arm and slip out of his hold, barely.
The sound of the sirens made him think twice about attacking again. He ran off, but not before warning me to stay quiet, or I was dead. Why he didn’t just shoot me right then and there, I don’t know.

As with most book lovers, I am an avid reader. Reading has always been a hobby - a passion, really and a way to get lost in other people’s lives, their drama and other worlds. It’s a private movie in your imagination that you get to cast and navigate through, at your own pace. Reading helps to expand the perimeters of one's mind. That is what got me into writing. Writing has been something that I have done since I was a kid. If I had paper, I was writing. Nine out of ten times it made no sense but what are words if they are not to be used to your advantage? Words are a part of us all. Why not use them, right?
During the day I work as a ‘desk jockey’ and help the residents of my county navigate themselves around our little, but not too little country town. By night I am either blogging with my best friends, doing PA work for some of my favorite authors or fighting with the voices in my head. They can be stubborn at times. It’s a blessing and I am cherishing every moment. Tomorrow is never guaranteed so I want to make sure I live the day as fully as possible. For what is my creation, can become someone else's treasure.
