Review: "My Decadent Demon (Vol 1 of My Demon Trilogy) by Alicia Dawn & Nikita Jakz

7/21/2014

Picture
Synopsis:

Seraphina Orielle, an angel of divine fire and light, was also an oracle of foresight. Considered adolescent among her peers, she had yet to master her gift of precognition when her first vision came to pass; a captivating male whose destiny was intimately intertwined with her own. Yet he was not of angelic design. In fact, he was very far from it. Tragically, by the time Sera discovered this pivotal detail, he had already attained ownership of her heart.
But not her ability to flee…
A hundred years later and Cole Asteroth does whatever the hell he wants. When he’s not busy, that is, with ‘dirty deeds, done dirt cheap’ for his master. Ornery and sarcastic, he gets his kicks wreaking havoc in the human realm. Oh, and making very un-angelic women beg for his touch. Life is good…
Until fate catches up with him.
A few weak moments, one too many innocent visitations and the two are entangled all over again. But things are much more complicated now. And Cole no longer possesses much in the way of faith and forgiveness.
As the estranged lovers struggle with what path to take, they quickly discover that destiny, too, is a reluctant second chance provider. As outside resistance and decadent captivity ensues, can their situation get any more exasperating?

Review:

This author gifted read was HOT! The first of a trilogy, a good and not so good meet add the heat between the two, it will burn you. A quick, fun read leaves you either loving or hating Seraphina. Who would leave that hot blooded, sex on a stick, Cole then takes... well no spoilers coming from me! You'll have to read it for yourself, and the book is definitely worth it!

Review: "The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer"  by Michelle Hodkin

7/21/2014

Picture
Synopsis:
Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.
After Mara survives the traumatizing accident at the old asylum, it makes sense that she has issues. She lost her best friend, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s sister, and as if that weren’t enough to cope with, her family moves to a new state in order to give her a fresh start. But that fresh start is quickly filled with hallucinations—or are they premonitions?—and then corpses, and the boundary between reality and nightmare is wavering. At school, there’s Noah, a devastatingly handsome charmer who seems determined to help Mara piece together what’s real, what’s imagined—and what’s very, very dangerous.

Review:

Mara has so much going on in her life and it takes most of the novel to sort through her initial conflict. You know she is a survivor of a terrible accident and her emotions are strung tight. She can’t remember what happened, so her mental state is in question through most of the book. She is sure she is seeing her friends who died every time she looks in the mirror, but she is forced to push it all aside and try to deal with her first day at a new school.

Her family moves to Florida and she is enrolled in a private school with her brother. He has no problem fitting in, but Mara just wants to blend in and go unnoticed. She isn’t able to though because she is the new girl and everyone has an eye on her for one reason or another. She meets a few interesting people, but none so interesting as Noah. He scares her and intrigues her at the same time, but he is the school playboy and she wants nothing to do with that. At the same time, Mara slowly begins to realize she has some wicked powers, but has no idea how to control them.

Noah’s charming and pulls her in, becomes her protector and gives her support to figure out what is happening in her mind. Noah has his own secrets, but he has to convince Mara to let him help her before it is too late. Mara pushes him away and has some tough decisions to make on her own, but will she make the right ones? Who will suffer as a result of her decisions? Her family? Her new friends? Noah? Great suspense and interesting twists leading to the cliffhanger ending.

There is a lot going on in this book. Several side stories seemed to be unnecessary in my mind, but didn’t detract from the story. Her father is the main lawyer on a defense team for a murder trial. As a result, there is another storyline used as an undercurrent in the book. It was intriguing, but not necessary to keep the story going. I wanted one of the side stories to keep going, but instead was left hanging in terms of what happened to her quirky friend who was expelled from school.

Despite that small issue, I fell in love with the book! I read it in one day- could NOT put it down. Lots of great tension, a fantastic book boyfriend in Noah, a wonderful brother in Daniel and great plot twists. The descriptions of the settings, the dialogue, and conflicts all work together to weave a beautifully written tale. This is the first book in a trilogy and I can’t wait to get the next book.

Review: "Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body"  (A Page Turners Novel Book 1)  by Jenny Marts

7/21/2014

Synopsis:

Sunny’s not sure she’s even looking for Mr. Maybe, when her friends decide to find her Mr. Right.

Sunny Vale considers herself a dog-loving, romance-reading, homebody. But her life goes from dull to deadly when her book club fires her from her own love life and sets her up on six blind dates- one of whom might be with a murderer. More trouble arrives in the dead of night, in the form of Jake Landon, a mysterious stranger, who breaks into her neighbor’s house and possibly her heart. But Jake is packing more than a loaded gun in his well-fitting Levi’s. He brings an arsenal of secrets and plenty of heat to Sunny’s ho-hum summer.

Jake Landon finds himself caught up in the capers of the sexy blonde in the house next door. But he has his own agenda which doesn’t involve playing hero to a curvy second-grade teacher and babysitting her panty-puking puppy. He's got other problems like fiery explosions, a missing person...and a parade of jerks Sunny insists on dating.

Could Sunny’s Mr. Right be right under her nose? Even though Jake is gorgeous, likes her dog, and has abs she can crack an egg on, can she really go out with him if he’s just murdered her next door neighbor?

Review:

Fabulously fun read! Great premise and fun, quirky characters draw you in and take you on a wonderful ride. The action begins quickly and with each turn of the page, you're drawn into Sunny's world. And Sunny's world is generally that of a quiet school teacher's. However, this summer, her life becomes chaotic and full of mystery beginning with the blind dates her well-meaning friends set her up on because she needs some excitement in her life.

Little do they know, the excitement of the dates, along with looking for Sunny's missing neighbor will take some unusual twists and turns. Luckily, Jake is there to help pick up the pieces and save her from some less than comfortable situations. But can she trust him? His life is a mystery to her and some of her friends are convinced he is a murderer. Just when she thinks things can't get any stranger, they do, and it will be up to her friends to solve the mystery. Will Sunny find Mr. Right?

I'm not giving away the ending, but needless to say, it is worth getting there. I enjoyed the characters. Her quirky older neighbor is a crack up and someone I'd love to get to know. Another thing I appreciated about the books was the suspense. It was well crafted and kept me guessing. It was not too predictable which was refreshing.

Review: "Invicta: Salvation" (Invicta #1) by Piper Kay

7/13/2014

Picture
Synopsis:

As Kaiden McKenzie and Holt Mitchell prepare to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary, and the grand opening of their new club, Invicta, they take a look back on how their lives together began.

When Holt wakes up to an outraged father, he finds himself suddenly homeless and hungry. With the help and caring of a certain bad guy, Holt finds life isn't quite so bad as it seems. All he needed was the right man to guide him along.

Kade has spent his life running from anyone and everyone who tries to get close, but when he meets up with Holt, he suddenly finds himself wishing for something more. Who knew he was someone’s knight in shining tattoos…

Review:

Whoever said a great book ends with a HEA (happily ever after) did not read THIS ONE. Unlike all the others, we get our “HEA” at the beginning!

From the first page to the last, we get a peek into the beginning of the lives of Kaiden and Holt as they begin on their adventure of overcoming resisting the attraction between one another to celebrating 15 years together and opening ‘Invicta’ a male go-go club.
Within the pages, Holt wakes up to a hateful father who kicks him out of his home for his choice of ‘lifestyle’ and he finds himself depending on Kaiden, a tattooed bad boy who in the end has a soft spot for Holt. Through their insecurities, self discoveries and trials, they find not only themselves, but each other.
Through only a short story, Piper tells the struggles that many young gay men face and does not disappoint the reader in any way. Short, steamy, fun and emotional! All wrapped up in a small package!
Oh, and top of it all… the cover model, is none other than Jake Bass! *fans self*

***A great short read that I would pick up again and again!***

Review: "Cowboy Take Me Away" (Rough Riders #16)by Lorelei James

7/13/2014

Picture
Synopsis:

The final Rough Riders book.

Settle in for the hot McKay romance that started it all...

The moment Carson McKay saw the sexy blonde at the dance hall, he wanted to throw her over his saddle and gallop hell-bent toward the closest church. Given his reputation as a lover and a fighter--not necessarily in that order--it wasn't surprising she gave him the cold shoulder. But he hadn't expected the mean right hook when he tried to steal a kiss.

Carolyn West might look sweet and innocent, but she's no fool. The good-looking cowboy with the heart-stopping smile didn't really want to marry her; he just wanted to take her for a test ride. But when he kisses her a second time, she doesn't fight her burning attraction to him...until she learns he's one of the McKay cowboys she's been warned about.

Carson doesn't care about the long-standing feud between their families; he knows that Carolyn was meant to be his. And the more intimate they become, the more Carolyn sees the real man behind the wild cowboy reputation--a man who wants the same forever kind of love she does...and who will lead her into a love story that spans fifty years.

Warning: Crazy, hot, sexy and sweet--good girl meets bad boy cowboy and they prove lust can last a lifetime.

Review:
Truly an amazing end to an amazing series. It was a ride of ups and downs, tears and laughter, joy and sorrow. Lorelei is such an amazing writer that not only did she take you along for the ride, but turned me into Carolyn McKay, minus the sexy cowboy husband. (Sorry honey) The thread of family love that began in One Hard Ride all the way through to Cowboy Take Me Away was highly apparent. The depth of love that Carolyn and Carson have for one another is amazing. I'm proud to say that I see that kind of love in my parents, and can only hope that my children see it in my marriage (even if Daddy isn't a cowboy).

I, for one, wish the book had been longer. That more McKay memories had been shared. If I had to pick just one favorite part, I'd be hard pressed to do so. But when Caro and Carson reached for each other at the end, declaring their undying love for one another, the realization that they did not want to go on without the other, well that is when I really broke down. It may have been Carolyn and Carson on the page, but it was my parents voices that I heard.

Amazing hot sex from the first moment they met. From up against the truck, to Cal taking Kimi in his brother's house after she became a grandma, to heading home after their anniversary party to rock that big ole house on it's foundation. Lorelei touched our libidos, and our hearts with the wild McKay's from beginning to the end. Every story must have an ending, and what a ride it has been. A happy place to stop with those that started it all, alive and well and still chasing their soul mates.

Review: "Lick" (A Stage Dive Novel) by Kylie Scott

7/13/2014

Picture
Synopsis:
Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas's plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man in her room, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is certain, being married to one of the hottest rock stars on the planet is sure to be a wild ride.

Review:

I have found a new series to 'dive' into and am so glad I picked it up. From the first page I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Evelyn experienced Vegas and did it in a big way. She's funny, smart, and at the same time, she is insecure and feels she is no one special. David, the hot rock star, thinks she is incredibly special and that she sees the real him.

Unfortunately, a snap decision throws both their lives into a tailspin. They are forced to work through all of it together. The emotions run the gamut and Scott pulls the reader in for the ride. I laughed, I cried, I yelled at David a few times and couldn't read fast enough. Evelyn's friends are amazing, her family is interesting, add to that David's extended family and you have a wild ride.

Both David and Evelyn have other issues beyond their relationship. It could have been too much, but Scott expertly blended it all together. The characters are amazing and relatable. She introduces us to the band and those in their lives who will be part of the subsequent books in the series.
The next book, Play, focuses on Mal and is even better!

Review: "Rule" (Marked Men Series) by Jay Crownover

7/13/2014

Picture
Synopsis:
Opposites in every way . . . except the one that matters

Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight--A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn't want--and the only person she's never tried to please. She isn't afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won't listen.

To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother's girl. She lives by other people's rules; he makes his own. He doesn't have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she's the only one who can see the person he truly is.

But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other.

Review:

This book taunted me from the recommendations page of B & N and Amazon for weeks. I finally caved and bought it, if for no other reason than to get a new recommendation. I am so glad I bought it! Another great first in a series that is worth the read.

Rule is the antithesis of his name. He breaks rules at every juncture except where it counts- at work. The story is set in Denver and as a resident myself, I felt Crownover captured the essence of our city. The descriptions of the settings are dead on and this was just an added bonus to a story I was caught up in from the beginning.

The tattoo shop in Downtown Denver becomes the hub of the story and continues into the following novels as well. A tattoo shop is already rich territory for stories based only on the customers, but the focus on the artists and their personal lives is interesting as well. Those men in the books are Rule, Jet, Rome, Rowdy, and Nash. Each of them is a man worth knowing.

Shaw has known Rule since they were kids and their relationship is tenuous on a good day. They have a past wrapped around his twin brother and while it could have brought them together, it only shoved them apart. They have what seems to be insurmountable odds to overcome, but Shaw thinks Rule is worth the effort. She has to convince him and his family that he is worth it too. Not a small job at all. Their story is emotional and entertaining.

Review "Get Rocked" (The Blow Hole Boys) by Tabatha Vargo 3 Books In One

PLAYING PATIENCE

Life’s been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn’t quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together, but she’s a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world. Playing careless is easy, playing the bad guy can be fun, but playing Patience is impossible, especially when she can see right through him.

Zeke isn’t the only one who’s broken, and for the first time, in a long time, Patience feels alive. Her black and white world gets a shot of color when she meets Zeke. He’s unlike anyone she’s ever met with his tattoos, piercings, and blunt honesty. She wants nothing more than to let go and ride the wild side with him, but some wounds never heal and the broken pieces of Patience aren't so easy to find.

PERFECTING PATIENCE

Sometimes happy endings are just the beginning of an even harder road.

Although her aunt and sister believe she should get help to deal with her past demons, Patience believes the only thing she needs is Zeke. When he comes back into her world, her life couldn't be more perfect. Except old demons pick the worst time to surface, and once again their happiness is threatened. Help was never a necessity, but Patience finds out that love isn't always all you need.

Zeke’s dealt with a lot in his life, but nothing could prepare him for watching the person he loves fall apart. Patience is different, she’s not the girl he came to love. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get her back, but a budding music career and his own demons seem to keep getting in the way. How can you help someone else when you can barely help yourself? Once again Zeke is faced with deciding between his future and the future of Patience.

FINDING FAITH

A little FAITH can get you through…

One night. That’s all Finn had with the only girl he ever loved. Years later, all he has left of that night is a silver cross, a broken give a damn, and the unrelenting desire to drink her memory away. As the lead singer of Blow Hole, Finn has his pick of women, but none are able to squash the need he still carries around for Faith. To hate her offers some relief, but when Finn sees her again after so many years, it’s hard to despise her. Especially when every reason he had to hate her, turn out to be lies.

As the daughter of a strict Baptist preacher, Faith Warren lived sheltered from all things sinful. When she met Jimmy Finn, the epitome of all seven deadly sins, she found out exactly what she was missing. After being forced to choose between her soul and the only person in the world who made her feel alive, Faith walked away from Finn and dove head first into her father’s preferred life. But now Finn’s back and he’s getting payback by wreaking havoc on her emotions. Except sometimes bad things feel good, and Faith has to decide once again if she wants to stay in her gilded cage or fly free with the dark angel of lust himself.

Review:

Reading this book I ran the gamut of emotions. Patience has so much to deal with and her story tore my heart out. Couple that with Zeke's life and the two of them are destined for a bumpy road. I warn you there is incest, abuse, drug use, and other emotionally charged issues woven throughout their story. I found Vargo's writing fresh and well done. The story is well told. The characters are completely developed and their world is vividly created on page.

Patience and Zeke made me crazy. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse for them, something else happened to tear them apart. They are both incredibly stubborn and independent, but need each other to hold the pieces together. I honestly wasn't sure if I wanted them together in the end though. They had so much history to overcome it seemed too much. In the end, their love for each other is enough. The sum of their experiences pulls them together.

Finn and Faith are another story Vargo created out of Zeke's story. Finn and Zeke are bandmates and hit it big, but before that, they both struggle with being from the wrong side of the tracks. In Zeke's book, Finn is the solid friend and level headed one. He came to be this way after a rough childhood and losing the woman he loved. You hear about her briefly in the first book and then you get the big picture in their own part of the novel.

Faith is a preacher's daughter who is straight-laced and sheltered. She is also beaten in the name of the Bible and kept under lock and key. Finn is in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up having community service for a crime he didn't commit. He meets Faith and decides it might not be so bad. The two clash and come together, her innocence drawing him like a moth to a flame, but they are not meant to be together if her father has anything to say about it.

Similar emotionally heavy topics are woven into their story. Each chapter is told from alternating POV's so as a reader you get the big picture. Sometimes though, the pieces of the puzzle don't come together right away. The stories are heart wrenching and at times I wanted to put the book down, but I had to keep reading! Finn needed me! I love Finn. He is the kind of guy you'd want your daughter to meet, even if he is a bit rough around the edges.
