ARC Review of: SEAL's Code: Book 3 in The Bad Boys of SEAL Team 3 by Sharon Hamilton
Synopsis:

Danny Begay has tried to drive out the voices of his ancestors, but his Navajo roots will not die. Summoned back to Arizona to visit his dying grandfather, a former Navajo Code Talker, he knows he has disappointed his hero grandfather. He buries himself one more time in the arms of a stranger before going back to Northern California.

Luci Tohe teaches at a reservation school, safeguarding the health of her ailing mother and little sister's future, her own life on hold. She doesn't expect the young Dine warrior she meets to be anything but a distraction from her loneliness.

Danny decides to join the Navy, as a SEAL, becoming the man he knew he was destined to be. Before deployment, he goes back to visit the girl he cannot get out of his mind. A dangerous human trafficking element threatens Luci and her family. Danny vows to protect them all.

My Review:

I had a difficult time getting into this book. The first couple chapters seemed disjointed to me and I was not sure if that was a result of not having read the first two books in the series. It took quite a while to wrap my brain around the storyline itself. Once I did, I struggled to stay interested or involved with the characters.

The military aspects of the book were interesting and the child trafficking piece was a good twist, but I could not get into the story. I felt sorry for Luci and her little sister, as well as her mother at times. I felt Danny, as a character, was a bit flat. He seemed almost emotionless. I am not sure if that was a result of the dialogue or the pacing of the story. At times, I felt that the writing mimicked the way some Native Americans speak- soft and deliberate. I'm not sure if that is what Hamilton was going for or not, but in my head, she nailed the reservation life and general feeling, based on my limited experience.

There is some suspense and decent romance, as well as a few surprises for the characters. I liked the friendships Danny formed while in the military and the family he was able to form as he learned to trust others and depend on them.
